Sharing Others' Good News

We know it sometimes seems like we're drowning in bad news, and certainly the media could do a better job of highlighting all the good news that is going on rather than only clubbing us over the head with relentless doom, but that is just my opinion.

Anyhow, I wanted to share and celebrate some great news from friends and colleagues — and we'll be back in touch soon with more of our own. Have a great and healthy day.

Texas State Bison Herd to Once Again Freely Roam the Caprock

On the Texas High Plains, congratulations to Texas Parks and Wildlife for taking the first step toward freeing the Southern Bison Herd into the wilds of Caprock Canyons State Park. These bison are rare genetic descendants of the original Southern Plains Herd, which was almost entirely exterminated.

Powderhorn Ranch Becomes Largest Conservation Investment in Texas History

Another incredible success has been achieved by Texas Parks and Wildlife's acquisition of more than 17,000 acres of prime coastal prairie on the Gulf of Mexico south of Houston as a new State Park. According to the Houston Chronicle, "The 17,351-acre spread, which covers 27 square miles, is one of the last big landholdings along the Texas coast with a nearly unspoiled coastal prairie habitat, including a variety of flora and fauna and natural features that were once abundant but are now threatened. The Nature Conservancy, the Conservation Fund and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation put the deal together in coordination with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which will eventually own and run the park and wildlife management area when it opens in a few years."

GPRC looks forward to assisting with prairie restoration through our Restoration Not Incarceration™ program, as well as diverse community engagement of the new park. This legendary place is not far from where the modern Texas story began in 1528, and people who visit will now have an exotically American experience on wild coastlands of the Texas Gulf that is almost gone elsewhere.
