Seeing the Big Picture
Combining technical ability and leadership skill is an effort that requires many years and is as much art as science. In developing his career path, Steven Moskowitz, Product Development and Portfolio Manager at Entegris, says the effort which enabled his success in rising to the level of leadership at technical organizations has been his keeping an eye on the big picture.
"I spent a lot of time thinking strategically and making sure I understood how things work together," said Moskowitz. "Be it the integration of processes to build a computer chip or the integration of teams to build an effective organization, keeping an eye on the big picture helped me from getting lost in the weeds in times of crisis."
Moskowitz acquired a BS in Chemistry from the University of Rochester and later a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Washington. Upon completing his graduate studies, he went to work at IBM's Microelectronics Division where he remained for over 12 years. He has since moved to Entegris where he has been for just over a year, but he continues his contributions to society through more than just his work.
"I maintain a strong focus on education," Moskowitz said. "Stretching as far back as my undergraduate and graduate studies where I was a Teaching Assistant, I have since been involved in establishing four different professional training programs, as well as personally developing and teaching over a dozen classes across multiple disciplines. I have trained the entire spectrum of manufacturing, engineering, scientific, and executive professionals. I have learned that reliable, relatable, and accessible education matters most when it comes to keeping your workforce at the top of its game."
Steven Moskowitz's advice for young professionals: "Look at the big picture; think about your career at all times and own it-don't expect someone else to create a career for you. You should be continuously developing new skills that go both broad and deep and never saying no to an opportunity to learn something new. Build strong professional relationships with your peers AND with the current and future leaders in your organization. Finally, don't be afraid to take risks - like many of life's great journeys it's sometimes more fun and exciting when you don't know the exact path to take."
