Diamond Jubilee Panelists Discuss Past, Present and Future of Innovation
The excitement building to the Diamond Jubilee is palpable. Registrations are on pace to make this, in many ways, the biggest meeting in IRI history, but there is still room for more.
New to the Diamond Jubilee Agenda:
Evolution of IRI
May 22, 2:00 - 2:30 pm
A special panel of three IRI presidents share their stories of how IRI came to be, where it is today and also discuss IRI's position statement on technology policy and Innovation Economy 2020. The three panelists are Chuck Larson, President, Innovation Research International (IRI president: 1975-2001), Ross Armbrecht, Executive Director, Delaware Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education (IRI president: 2001-2005), and Ed Bernstein (IRI president: 2005-present).
Awards Dinner Keynote
May 22, 7:30 pm
As Deputy Director of ARPA-E, Dr. Martin is responsible for oversight of the Agency. She leads ARPA-E's Technology-to-Market program which helps breakthrough energy technologies succeed in the marketplace. Prior to joining ARPA-E, Dr. Martin was an Executive in Residence with Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, a venture capital firm based in Menlo Park, California.
Dr. Martin also spent 20 years with Rohm and Haas Company, starting her career as a Senior Scientist for the company's Plastics Additives business and then holding various research and marketing roles in the Plastics Additives and Coatings businesses.
ARPA-E advances high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that are too early for private-sector investment. These projects have the potential to radically improve U.S. economic prosperity, national security, and environmental well-being. Dr. Martin will discuss "ARPA-E: Changing What's Possible," at the IRI Awards Banquet.

Let the Tech Tournament Begin!
Submissions accepted starting June 1, 2013
The stage is set for a major showdown among top technology innovators. IRI's Tech Tournament will kick-off following the Diamond Jubilee (submissions will be accepted starting June 1, 2013).
This bracket-style competition will determine the most meaningful technological advancement from the past three-quarters of a century. This contest is designed to showcase the contributions and capabilities of all IRI member companies who have the opportunity to explain why their technological, process, or business innovation has made the largest impact on today's social, economic, technological, industrial and/or business landscape.

Entries for this tournament should highlight an innovation that was created after 1938 (entries for innovations from before 1938 will be disqualified). Entrants publish a short video (30 seconds to 2 minutes in length) or a photo to the tournament platform after June 1st. Entries will fall into one of four categories:
- Product & Service Innovations;
- Business Innovations;
- Innovations that created a new industry;
- Innovations that enhanced a societal good.
Each member company can only make one submission. All entries will be voted on in an open voting system where anyone can participate. The first place winner will receive a Swarovski crystal trophy at the IRI Future Summit in San Jose, CA, November 20. Prepare your entries today and be ready to square off against your fellow IRI members.

CTO Forum Registration at Record High
IRI's signature event, the CTO Forum, provides a rare opportunity for chief technology officers from IRI member companies to mingle on a more intimate basis and discuss the issues which affect men and women in their position.
This year's CTO Forum is currently at capacity for attendance, with more CTO's registered to attend than in any previous year.
The networking opportunity is tremendous and the conversations held by these technology leaders generate the relationships that will fuel the next wave of collaborative innovation.

Join the distinguished ranks of IRI members who have shared their favorite memories of time spent with IRI. Stan Jaskolski, Phillip Minerich, and Jules Blake have written their personal stories on our anniversary site, all of which make for informative reading of the value of networking with IRI.
In Jules Blake's " Homage to IRI," he tells of meeting Harry Coover, the inventor of crazy glue, and discussing the selection of research leaders while at an IRI event. This story and others like it are what make our networking experiences so unique and we'd like to learn yours.
Contribute your story so all members and prospective members can see and learn about all the good IRI does.

Flashpoint Updates
April 3: The Way Social Media Strengthen Innovation discusses recent studies into social media and the role that dormant, lapsed, or weak social ties have on the innovation process. This article also offers a first look into the new ROR project Weak Ties and Innovation, co-chaired by Natalie Schoch (Kellogg Co.) and Leonard Huskey (U.S. Army Research Lab).
April 15: In continuing their study into sustainability practices, the ROR working group that brought you the Sustainability Maturity Model will continue their project with a new study (Sustainability-Driven Innovation) into the ways sustainability can enhance innovative processes. Discussed briefly in a Flashpoint article (Sustainability: Leverage or Burden?), sustainability is viewed through the different ways it can help or hinder growth.
April 22: IRI published a position statement at the close of 2012 which included a call to establish an Innovation Economy 2020 initiative similar to the Health & Human Services (HHS) program known as "Healthy People." IRI President Ed Bernstein penned an article on Flashpoint titled Why Innovation Economy 2020 Matters in order to explain why today's leaders need to understand that innovation policy, contrary to the belief that there is no precedent for establishing one, does indeed have a precedent in the HHS Healthy People program and should be enacted as soon as possible.
May 1: IRI Research-on-Research (ROR) working groups tend to offer mid- to long-term research proposals for projects which span a year or more. A new ROR group, however, is breaking this trend by presenting a unique 3-hour session at the Diamond Jubilee in order to discuss and present the findings for the differences in generational expectations for R&D leadership all in one meeting. An article on Flashpoint (The Millennial Challenge: Generational Leadership Expectations) discusses what this group plans to do and how your organization may benefit by participating in the study.
