Fern Hill Elementary counselor Marinda Peters  -- who was Oregon's 2014 School Counselor of the Year -- was honored by First Lady Michelle Obama Thursday, along with other state winners. The ceremony at the White House was a kickoff to National School Counseling Week Feb. 1-5 and also introduced the National School Counselor of the Year award winner. The School Counselor of the Year program selects a winner and finalists each year based on several criteria: creative school counseling innovations, effective school counseling programs, leadership skills and contributions to student enhancement.

District Practices Reunification Drill
District office staff practiced a reunification drill today. Reunification can be necessary in emergency situations where students must be evacuated from their school and reunited with parents at another location. District office staff will play a key role in any reunification because they will be deployed to the reunification site first to set up and operate the site. The drill also involved staff from other schools, plus about 35 student volunteers. The district has been working closely with area law enforcement agencies in developing a reunification process and a comprehensive emergency plan.
