Transportation at the Holidays
In the last couple of months of every year brings season changes, festivities, holiday events, and family gatherings. In the transportation industry we are greatly affected by the increase in demand for many products that are shipped across the country to consumers everywhere. Thanksgiving in particular brings a significant increase in demand for goods such as decorations, food items, raw goods (i.e. wood, trees, etc.), and many different types of manufactured goods.
Food goods are particularly in extremely high demand around Thanksgiving. Roughly 228 million turkeys are sold in the US each year just for Thanksgiving celebrations. Did you know that 2,000 turkeys can be hauled at once from a turkey farm to the slaughter house? That means it takes 114,000 truckloads to get all those turkeys to the processor. After that, the turkeys must be distributed, sometimes taking several different trucks before they finally reach their final destination at your local grocery store. This scenario is an indication of how important the transportation supply chain is.
Another high-demand food product during the Thanksgiving season is sweet potatoes. Approximately 3 billion pounds of sweet potatoes are grown and sold commercially every year for the holidays. With numbers like that, it takes around 70,000 truckloads just to get those potatoes from the farm to the warehouse. From there, like turkeys, these potatoes take several more rides before ending up at your local grocery store. This is just a small glimpse into the huge increase in transportation demand during Thanksgiving and the holidays. So when you go out to buy your turkey and potatoes for the upcoming holiday, remember the vast amount of effort, time, commitment, planning, and hard work that went into getting those products to you. All of that alone will make you just a little more thankful this coming Thanksgiving!
