We have all seen some wild swings in the truck market over the last 7-8 years.  For a while there, it seemed impossible to tell how the market would swing from season to season; and that might still be true.  Fuel costs have gone from sky high to 20 year lows and back and forth again.  We went from what seemed like a very adequate supply of drivers to companies fighting over anybody with a CDL.  For a time, there was no such thing as too high of a rate quote.  

Texas has been no stranger to these swings and may have seen some of the worst of them.  The Texas produce market saw freight rates climb higher and higher and there never seemed to be a break in the action.  The normal trends from season to season disappeared as the driver/truck shortage got worse and worse.  Fueled by the oil boom, drivers became impossible to hire.  Oil field companies were hiring every able bodied person they could and long haul trucking became less and less desirable as an occupation.  With a relatively flat economy and a slowdown in new oil drilling, the pressure seems to be off at the moment.  This summer the Texas market held much closer to the old pattern; high freight volume and higher rates from February thru July 4th with a decrease in August.  You used to be able to set your watch by that trend from year to year. Carriers and shippers alike knew what to expect and it provided for a stable rate market.

If current economic news is any indicator, there is plenty of volatility to come in the world markets, but for the time being the old trends appear to be back.  Who knows if or for how long they will hold true.  One thing's for sure, whether the swing is up or down, it will be an interesting ride.
