PMA Fresh Summit 2014 - Learning from the Show Floor

The Allen Lund Company and ALC Logistics, our software and logistics division participated as exhibitors for the 19th year at the 2014 PMA Fresh Summit. The event was held in Anaheim, October 17-19.  While this was my 12th PMA Fresh Summit, many of my co-workers have attended for many more years than myself.  Each year it is always interesting to listen and discuss with grower/shippers the challenges facing them.  In past years it may have been trucking capacity, HOS, regulation updates or catastrophic weather.  We wanted to share some of the issues we discussed over the duration of the show.

This year there seemed to be a theme about doing more with less and identifying areas where more efficient options were available.  Kenny Lund, VP of Support Operations, actually mentioned this to me and it definitely resonated as I listened at the booth and walked the floor with colleagues.

In California, the drought has been well documented and discussed thoroughly. However, I didn't realize how many growers were going to shift their growing and shipping to Arizona earlier than expected due to the lack of water.  We heard several times that the growing conditions in the desert have been optimal for an early transition for most of the industry, that should translate to hopefully a better bottom line.  The challenge of immigration and lack of workers for the growers in California is also an issue.  This is yet another area that the extreme drought has exacerbated. The fields still need to be worked; however there is a water availability issue, far less acreage being harvested and workers have to fill the same baskets with smaller fruit. Many are either losing their jobs, seeking work in other states in the western region, or have returned to their home base.

Efficiencies in transportation, supply chain/logistics and software were all discussed on the show floor with attendees and exhibitors searching for more economical manners in which to do business.  There was plenty of networking and conversation with one another to accomplish the goal of efficiency.

All in all the show, which had a record number of exhibitors and set attendance records both Saturday and Sunday. It was a great investment for our company and provided strong networking opportunities as well as time to listen, learn and absorb the many issues facing the produce industry.
