Keep Your VMT Updated...

The 411 on updating your MCS-150

All trucking companies should be monitoring their information on the FMCSA site. With the most recent changes to the site, you might have noticed some new remarks listed on the Company Snapshot page (for your specific company) like this: "The information below reflects the content of the FMCSA management information systems as of 9/17/2014 Carrier VMT Outdated," or "The information below reflects the content of the FMCSA management information systems as of 9/17/2014 Carrier Registration Information Outdated." ( As shown here, the critical items may be displayed in a red font.)

What does this mean? And how does it affect you? VMT stands for Vehicle Miles Traveled. Keeping your VMT updated is important for a couple of reasons. First, the Not Authorized status will lead to your trucks being shut down if they are pulled over for a roadside inspection. Secondarily, outdated VMT has a profound effect on your SMS scores. VMT per average power unit (listed PU on the site) is a major part of the equation used to come up with your SMS score. Having high SMS scores leads to more intensive (and expensive) inspections when pulled over, which in turn leads to DOT audits and possibly making your company less attractive in the transportation market.

Keeping on top of your DOT profile and taking the simple steps of updating your company's information can have broad scale result, for minimal effort.
