Keeping it Local
There are many perks with buying locally grown produce. Nationally, the average distance produce travels is 1500 miles. Local food, on the other hand, travels substantially fewer miles (100-mile radius on average), which saves on economy/businesses energy costs and valuable non-renewable resources. Another perk is that local produce conserves energy (gas, road/car maintenance, paper for reporting) used for transport. It is also very nutritious because it is delivered for immediate use by the consumer, direct from the farms in which it is grown. Whereas produce traveling long distances is older and can lose some of its nutritional value in this aging process; sugars turn into starches, plant cells break down, and flavor, as well as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, are lost. If the product is transported properly, these issues are minimized.
Let's not forget that buying local produce also supports our local farms in a great way. I had the opportunity to meet with Mike and Chad Buurma from Buurma Farms, located in Willard, OH and was amazed to learn how much locally grown product is produced during harvest. Buurma Farms' order sheet has 84 different produce items, including four different kinds of "cukes" (cucumbers). "We are constantly rotating our crops. As soon as they are picked, we are re-planting new ones," said Chad Buurma. Lastly, it was pointed out that buying locally doesn't only support farmers, but also our economy by funding jobs and putting money back into our local communities. All in all, it ultimately contributes to a better way of life for everyone involved.
