Trending Concerns Facing the Industry

Recently, I was looking at the survey being conducted by the American Transportation Research Institute. Commissioned by the American Trucking Association (ATA), the survey sought to address the various concerns plaguing the trucking industry. While the results are supposed to be released later this year,  I think it will be interesting to see what hot-button issues have cooled and which new ones have cropped up.

In 2012, some of the concerns that stood out to me were:

Economy/Fuel concerns: It seems like this is and always will be a concern for everyone in our industry. Although fuel costs have slightly decreased from this time last year, it still is a huge variable that will always be on the forefront of any carriers' mind.

Hours of Service: Now that the new laws have come into effect, Hours of Service has become an even larger concern than it was last year. It seems like drivers are having a hard time adjusting to the new regulations and carriers are having a tough time planning multiple routes at a time. I have heard of numerous cases where routes were asked to be adjusted to allow for more time to make on-time deliveries.

Lack of Consistent Freight: I know carriers are always weary of the dreaded times when the freight slows down. Unfortunately with the seasons involved with freight, it seems there will always be a cyclical pattern of slow and busy times.

In this fun and crazy industry that we all are intertwined in, there is nothing that ever seems to stay constant. Each year, there are new issues that arise and new concerns that need to be addressed. So the question is what concerns do you have? What keeps you awake at night? We'd love to hear your thoughts on these issues.
