California Reefer Rates

Memorial Day is on the horizon, Californians are flocking to the beaches and Shippers/Buyers/Brokers are searching for refrigerated capacity on the West Coast.  The Memorial Day holiday usually sees the largest spike in CA reefer rates, sometimes the highest of the season.  However, circumstances leading up to this year's holiday weekend are a bit different.

Reefer rates in CA originally spiked during the beginning of Easter and strawberry season.  They have consistently been 8%-12% higher than last year and with cherry season starting one week early, as well as CA fruit season just around the corner, there doesn't seem to be much relief in sight.  Memorial Day orders and reefer needs are stacking up.

There are several schools of thought as to why this year has already seen such high rates and capacity issues including the California Air Resources Board (CARB), a slow economy, driver shortage, diesel prices, etc.  But in the end, I imagine the correct answer is "all of the above."  The implementation of the CARB regulations has most certainly played a part in this year's situation.  In looking at the climate, when approaching the season, it could be said that CA reefer capacity could be down 25% due to the CARB regulations, but it is impossible to say with any certainty whether or not this is the root of the cause.

So what does the rest of the summer have in store for us?  Your guess is as good as mine, but I do know that the carriers you can trust and depend on are more important than they have ever been.
