Preparing for a Successful New Year
As we begin the New Year, we should take this opportunity to reflect on improving ourselves. Did we achieve our goals this past year? Are we satisfied with who we are? What are we going to do differently to achieve the results we want this year?
I remember pondering what success would look like for me as I began my new job as a freight broker. What exactly is that anyway? Let's take a moment to remind ourselves of who we are as freight brokers. A freight broker is "one who protects the shipper's interest while recognizing an equal obligation to protect the carrier's interest. They are responsible for exercising reasonable care and diligence. A broker can be a key transportation resource" (Ackerman Warehousing Forum, Volume 25 Number 1 December 2009).
What characteristics do successful people exhibit? Successful folks demonstrate humility, while maintaining integrity. They use sound judgement, while considering the big picture. Successful people are adaptable and communicate well. They express appreciation and show empathy to others.
How can I mimic those characteristics to achieve my own success? I resolve to do the right things for the right reasons in the right order. I resolve to live a life of no regrets. I want folks to feel encouraged after speaking with me. I want to be a servant leader.
How do others view you? Do your customers see you as a key transportation resource? Thankfully, I have a wonderful team willing to mentor me so that I can become a key transportation resource to our customers. I'm striving to be the best broker I can be. I challenge you to become even more successful in 2013.
