A Few Words From Our President
| |
Moon Festival October 5Summer is fast ending; we are now entering a very busy time of year. Our ever-popular annual Moon Festival (中秋) celebration takes place on Saturday, October 5th. The SPCC Planning Committee again has put together an action-packed program with activities for the entire family. "Face-Changing"(變臉) will be part of the Festival's fun and entertaining program, courtesy of the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library. "Face-Changing" (變臉) is a 300-year-old ancient Chinese Sichuan opera act. Performers with brightly colored opera costumes move to quick, dramatic music and change masks with astonishing speed by quickly moving the head. The masks are changed almost instantaneously in the blink of an eye, right in front of you. You have to see it to believe it. School Board ForumAnother very important event is our upcoming local South Pasadena election, which will be held on Tuesday, November 5th. Since SPCC focuses on education, it is holding a School Board Candidate Forum--to enable voters to understand each candidate's vision. Sponsored jointly with the League of Women Voters, Pasadena Area, the Forum will take place on Wednesday, October 9th, in the South Pasadena Unified School District Board Room, starting at 7:00 p.m. Several Forums are being conducted for City Council Candidates. SPCC's mission is to promote Chinese Culture and quality education for our children. Please join us on October 5th at our Moon Festival to experience our rich Chinese culture. Come to the Candidate Forum on October 9th to learn more about the School Board candidates, and then cast your important vote on November 5. You're InvitedAs President of SPCC, I invite you to attend one of our monthly meetings, which are held on the second Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Library Community Room (1115 El Centro Street). If you can spare few hours a month, we would love you to join the Board to help plan activities or to serve meals to the homeless at Union Station in Pasadena. For more information, please email us at [email protected]. Warmest Regards, Jeannie ChiuPresident

The exciting Chinese lion dancers will begin the program, followed by a face-changing artist, a crowd-pleasing acrobat, Chinese folk dancers, line dancers, South Pasadena High School students singing traditional Chinese songs, a dragon- beard candy maker, and the Miss Chinatown LA Court. South Pasadena High School Scholarship awardees (left to right), Jenny Chan, Isabel Chin, Brian Choe, and Eui Hyeon Song are congratulated by Joan Aguado (center), SPCC Vice President, for their outstanding academic performance. |
Karl Hwang Scholarships Awarded to Local StudentsAt the South Pasadena High School graduation in June, SPCC announced that Isabel Chin and Eui Hyeon Song were the recipients of this year's two Karl Hwang scholarships of $2,000 each, established in memory of Dr. Karl Hwang, a biophysical chemist and a former SPCC president. "Thank you so much for the generous scholarship," Isabel Chin said. "It is such an honor to receive an award in the name of Dr. Karl Hwang . . . I plan to use my scholarship to help pay for the "student contribution" portions of my tuition at Brown University. I am so looking forward to university and cannot thank you enough for helping make it possible." Isabel Chin and Eui Hyeon Song demonstrated a well-rounded approach to learning and living along with a significant commitment to community service, the SPCC Scholarship Committee said. All graduating seniors of South Pasadena High School who are planning to attend an accredited four-year college/university are eligible to apply.Criteria for selection include community service, leadership ability, academic achievement, and how well the applicant scores on an essay describing his or her future goals and why those goals were chosen.
SPHS Students Receive Jojoe Zee Memorial Chinese Language AwardIn June, Eun (Brian) Choe and Jenny Chan were awarded the "Jojoe Zee Memorial Chinese Language Award," an award previously known as the "Most Improved Student in the Chinese Language" award. The awardees were chosen among senior-level students recommended by Chinese-language teacher Emily Chiang. She based her recommendations on her observation of each student's effort to learn Chinese over the entire study period, which covers a number of courses, and on overall academic excellence. From the list of recommendations, the SPCC Scholarship Committee chose Brian Choe and Jenny Chan, who clearly demonstrated effort and achievement. This award has been renamed the "Jojoe Zee Memorial Chinese Language Award" in memory of Jojoe Zee, a major donor to SPCC. She was an active contributor to the community and supporter of the schools. She was married to Paul Zee, one of the three founders of SPCC. Jojoe passed away in March 2012, and SPCC renamed its scholarship in her memory and as a tribute to her dedication to educating young people and encouraging them to learn the Chinese language and culture. The SPCC Scholarship Committee for both awards for 2013 was composed of Melinda Louie, Chair, along with Alice Hwang, Suzette Lee-Shults, Peter Leung, and Rosa Tzeng.
