Conference of the Year . . .

Mary, Claudia, and Mirna are articulate English speakers who live in the Rio Grande Valley. In a region where only one in three people speak English, they have beaten the odds. Credit their hard work and determination, and the Rio Grande Valley Literacy Center.

RGV Literacy Center Executive Director Jenny Newcomb proudly introduced the students and former student in her conference workshop, The End Result Has Something to Say:  "They wanted to be able to have a voice in conversation with their peers and the community. They're bright, brilliant women who have opinions. They all found ways to overcome barriers."
Stories such as these had last week's Literacy Texas Conference in San Marcos buzzing with excitement and optimism. The sold-out conference covered every facet of adult language and literacy. It brought together directors, teachers, volunteers, experts and newcomers--and even some students--"to discuss the most current and prevailing issues shaping adult literacy in Texas." This stated goal of Literacy Texas Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Edwards was certainly met.

It was our privilege to be a part of this superbly planned event and to present workshops on our Ready for School and TEX programs. We appreciate the great encouragement and affirmation that came our way over the three days, including Pam Moore's Volunteer of the Year honor.

The world may be inspired by the Games in Rio, but three accomplished women from the Rio Grande Valley--and many others at the conference--challenged all of us to serve faster, higher, and stronger to meet the literacy needs of people in Texas.
