We joined Literacy Connexus . . .

For some children, summer is a time dedicated to playing video games, sleeping in, vacationing, and relaxing before the beginning of yet another school year. Unfortunately, not all children have video games nor do they vacation. For this reason, the Housing Authority of the City of Harlingen, in conjunction with Literacy Connexus and Catholic Charities, has presented the children of our community with the Summer Reading Program.

Our quest is to encourage a love of reading. After all, it has been proven that reading boosts test scores, improves literacy rates, and enhances overall academic performance. As we like to say, "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader".

Literacy Connexus has graciously donated their time and effort in donating books to our Family Learning Centers. Children are encouraged to come and check out books on a daily basis. While reading the books, they enjoy a free nutritious meal provided by Catholic Charities.

The learning centers have gathered a great group of kids at each site. Before they can say, "I'm bored," our summer student mentors--Donald Almazon, Francisco Munoz, Alma Dominguez, Heriberto Contreras, Alondra Hernandez, Geneva Diaz, Sara Prieto and Manuel Vargas--cheerfully keep the children entertained.
