Blessings by the book . . .

Kids at  Cornerstone Baptist Church in South Dallas are going to pull a fast one on their teachers this fall. Thanks to Pastor Chris Simmons' Reading Club, their literacy skills are going to be sharper and stronger than when summer started. Teachers will not be expecting this, knowing that many low-income families don't have access to books when school is not in session.

It's a simple concept--kids report what they read to the pastor and earn prizes. And don't be surprised when, along the way, they expand their vocabularies and broaden their horizons. There's nothing like a good book, and a good man to share it with, to cultivate a love of reading that will bless those kids for the rest of their lives.
Books donated by Literacy Connexus and HEB to participants of Cornerstone's After School Program earlier this year

Pastor Simmons must have done some reading himself. He knows that students often lose up to two months of reading achievement during the summer months, but digging into just five books can keep them from sliding. He's even got a plan to make sure appropriate books are available, participating in a project called Libros Libres, a collaboration between Little Free Libraries, Big Thought, bcWORKSHOP, and the Dallas Public Library.

Imagine the looks on teachers faces if every church started a Pastor's Reading Club . . .
