We joined Literacy Connexus . . .
Each school year, the Royal Ambassadors and Girls in Action of First Baptist Church Abilene join together in a mission project to to put into action their desire of sharing the love of Christ with others. This year they had the privilege of partnering with Literacy Connexus through a Books for the Border project. The RAs, grades 1 through 5, built 22 bookcases for several weeks during their Wednesday night mission's time. The GAs completed the bookcases by painting them. Following the construction and painting, the children began collecting books to go with the bookcases to Eagle Pass. The children, as well as church members, donated both new and gently used books. They held a pancake supper to earn money for the core books recommended by Literacy Connexus. This was another way to include the church family and display the mission project. Tables were decorated using pictures of the RAs and GAs with the finished bookcases and donated books.

During spring break, John Moore, Pastor for Missions, along with his dad, Tom, and son, Marshall, took the bookcases to Eagle Pass to join with students from Baylor University. The students of Baylor helped host the Nick Carr family reading fair where children and their parents chose a bookcase and books to take home and enjoy. There is no doubt that at least one child's life is different because of God using this ministry.
Afterward, we received a wonderful slide show from Caroline Bell, Literacy Connexus board member and volunteer, showing the children that received the bookcases and books. What a blessing for our children to be able to see their work being used through this ministry and the effect it has on others.
We look forward to more opportunities to partner with Literacy Connexus and share God's love.

There's more . . .
The hundreds of books collected by FBC Abilene RAs and GAs overflowed into a second family reading fair. On Good Friday, Kendrick Lane Baptist Church in Waco partnered with Congreso 2013 students to help with a neighborhood family reading fair, blessing 15 more children.
