Trade Secret 54:

The BASIC approach to selling signs profitably

Tomm Moll of Tomm Studios [www.etomm.com] learned the ropes in sales, then went into the sign business. His early clients were mostly car dealers, and he continued learning about sales by working and talking with them. He credits his sales-oriented approach for making his 30-plus years in the business possible.

One of the things that haunted him in his early years in business was how easy it is to overlook something when doing an estimate and having profit disappear. So he came up with a simple word to remember that helped him make sure he had covered all the bases: BASIC.

"At first," Tomm says, "I kept this graphic pinned on the wall right beside my desk. But after years of looking at it, it became second nature. Give it a try. You'll be surprised how adding a few line item extras on every invoice can lead to profitability."

you do can make the difference between profit and loss. And customers are used to getting charged for each aspect of a project.

Pricing that way is usually more acceptable than just getting a single lump sum price. If the total price needs adjusted to fit their budget, they can look at those line items to see what can be done rather than just pressuring you for lower overall price.
