News from Austin Art in Public Places                                              MAY 2016
birdHello Black Bird!

Republic Square Park will begin a renovation project in the summer of this year. As part of the renovations, local artists Joseph and Holly Kincannon of Kincannon Studios have been commissioned to create Black Bird for the park. In the words of the artists, this family-friendly sculpture references "our social identity as non-conformists, lover of eccentrics and outlier iconography, Austin's grackles, and the whisper of music."

Black Bird will be carved from Texas Cordova Cream limestone and coated with a black lacquer buffed to a luster finish. The surface pattern draws from Oaxacan style pottery and the bird's tail will be cast bronze with a black patina finish. Black Bird will be nestled among the existing Cypress trees in the northwest portion of the park.

About the artists

Joseph Kincannon and Holly Young-Kincannon have been working in Austin since 1992. Their  practice is devoted to architecture, urban design, stone carving and masonry construction. More information about their east Austin studio can be found at KincannonStudios.com.

Art in Progress: Spin and Array

As work around Austin's new Central Library and the Seaholm District continues, AIPP will soon bring new artwork to the area with Spin and Array by local artist Judd Graham. Array will consist of nine bollard sleeves to be installed along a new festival street in the Seaholm District. Spin will be a single sculpture placed in proximity to Array, and will be similar in materials and design but much larger than the bollard sleeves in scale, and able to spin with a push from the viewer. The artworks are currently in fabrication, and are being made from solid steel bar that is "fullered" on one side during forging to create a textured pattern. Look for these sculptures when 2nd Street Extension opens to the public this fall.

COLLECTION SPOTLIGHT

She is Alive!
by Jerald Don Evans

She Is Alive! by artist Jerald Don Evans was installed in 2001 at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center at 1165 Angelina Street. This bronze sculpture commemorates the first three African American firefighters hired by the City of Austin in 1952 marking a significant historical moment in the years leading up to the Civil Rights Movement. For future generations of residents and visitors, this memorial will convey the impact of these men's lives and honor their service to the city.
