News from Austin Art in Public Places                                             APRIL 2016
goldenIt's a Golden Afternoon at Seaholm and you're invited!

Public Art Dedication & Celebration
When: April 22, 6 - 8 p.m.
Where: Seaholm Plaza (parking garage on Walter Seaholm Dr.)

Come celebrate Golden Afternoon, the newest addition to the City's public art collection, a 40' x 40' art installation which incorporates light capable of interacting with the viewer. Artists Rick Lin and Shagun Singh of Urban Matter Inc. will be in attendance to talk about their inspiration and the art-making process. In a nod to Alice's "mad tea party," iced tea and sweet treats will be served. Visitors can pick up their own packet of Texas wildflower seeds and Alice in Wonderland activity books, courtesy of the Harry Ransom Center. The Austin Public Library's mobile library will also be on site.

The event will take place on the plaza level above the Seaholm Parking Garage at 211 Walter Seaholm Drive, between Trader Joe's and the former power plant stacks. You are encouraged to take public transportation to this event- as on-street parking is limited. (Trader Joe's provides one hour of free parking in the garage with purchase).

About the artwork
Inspired by Texas wildflowers and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the artists created an artwork that mimics a garden spilling over from the flower beds on the roof of the garage, down the open stairwell, and making its way into the parking structure. Reminiscent of a trip down the rabbit hole from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the artwork experience is heightened by sensors which direct the lighting to respond to people moving up and down the stairs.

Project expanded to include a second residency opportunity!

Budget: $38,000 (AFD) / $48,000 (EMS)

Deadline to Apply: 4/21/16 @ 5 PM

Eligibility: Austin Metro Area

AIPP seeks to commission two artists-in-residence to create permanent artwork for six fire stations and three emergency medical services stations. The artwork must reflect the mission of AFD and EMS to create safer communities through prevention, preparedness, and effective emergency response. The artists will spend approximately 10-15 hours per week observing the activities of the stations over a 2-3 month period. At the end of the residency period, the artists will submit a proposal to create a series of works to be sited on the interior or exterior walls of the stations. Artists will only need to submit one application to be considered for both opportunities. Or, an artist can indicate in their Letter of Interest which project they wish to be considered for.

COLLECTION SPOTLIGHT

Untitled (Playground Sidewalk Mural)
by Dale Whistler

This sidewalk mural was originally commissioned in 1994 and was just recently restored with a fresh new coat of paint. The circular design depicts the phases of the moon and also incorporates a spiral motif taken from ancient cave art and Native American designs. "As a society I think we're out of balance away from nature," the artist said. "I was trying to draw us back towards an awareness of nature and towards tradition as well." Make sure to visit this newly restored piece at Dick Nichols Park, 8011 Beckett Rd.
