AIPP at the Airport: Our new site for new works at ABIA

Art in Public Places is taking a step in bringing the public art process to Austin residents. AIPP is tracking the progress of new public art projects at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) on the City of Austin website and giving residents a chance to provide input to assist the commissioned artists.

Visit Public Art at the Airport to see status updates on current projects, including video messages from the selected artists, upcoming public meetings, and images of public artworks at ABIA.

Janet Echelman - ABIA Entrance Project - What Makes Austin Unique?

In a short video, commissioned artist Janet Echelman asks Austin residents to tell her what makes Austin a unique place to live and visit. The responses will help Echelman to design art for the Airport Entrance AIPP Project which reflects the nature and character of Austin, a goal of all public art projects at the airport.

Pedestrian Geometries: New Artwork on 3rd Street!

Using more than 30 unique colors of glazed brick, the sculptures appear like bright fragments of historical architecture growing from the sidewalk, and suggest textiles and paintings with their complex and varied patterned surfaces. The colors and forms were inspired by a variety of sources including Navajo rugs, Islamic textiles and the natural geography of Texas. The work was developed with help from project partners Nicole Blair, C.W. Oates Masonry, Inc., and Elgin Butler.

COLLECTION SPOTLIGHT

The Trail of Tejano Legends
by Connie Arismendi

The Trail of Tejano Legends commemorates significant musicians in Austin's Hispanic communities. Tenderly, located along Nash Hernandez Sr. Road in Festival Beach Park, honors Hernandez, a band leader and trumpeter. A silhouette of Hernandez stands atop a circular base, which is encircled by lyrics from "Tenderly," the song dedicated to his wife, Minnie, with which he ended each performance.
