Uplifted Ground dedicated at the Airport
| |
Uplifted Ground, by Michael Singer Studio, was dedicated on October 28, 2015. The large-scale installation is located on the top level of the parking garage at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and is AIPP's largest completed commission to-date. (Michael Singer pictured second from the left)
About the Artwork
The hundreds of earth-toned, grounded and suspended elements of this large-scale artwork were inspired by local geological formations, native minerals, and aerial photography. During the day, the delicate reflection of the embedded metals is accompanied by shifting geometric patterns of shadow; at night, light emerges from the elements creating a graceful dance of light along the walkway. The artwork is also an integral part of the structural design for the walkway.
In an effort to create visual continuity, some of the sculptural elements are also installed in circular "wells" in the plaza of the Rental Car Facility. The vertical pieces of these elements reference both nearby geological cave formations as well as the drawing of water from wells connected to limestone aquifers in the region.
This complex project was installed by local rigging company, Shur-Rig LLC, with support from Michael Singer Studio. Portions of the project were fabricated and installed by local -sheet metal fabricators, Crippen Sheet Metal. Structural steel and electrical work was provided by local companies, Patriot Erectors, Inc. and Schmidt Electric Co., respectively. The granite used in the artwork was quarried and cut in Marble Falls, TX.
