TEMPO 2015

TEMPO 2015
The intent for the 2015 edition of AIPP's temporary art program, TEMPO, is to cultivate curiosity, spark imagination, foster work by local artists, engage the community in a meaningful public art dialogue and cultivate tourism. A Request for Proposals went out in March 2015 asking for site-specific, short-term artwork or time-based performances in designated areas of Austin, including parkland spaces, libraries, streets and bridges, right-of-way, and other sites to be
determined. To see all the TEMPO 2015 projects, click here!

Las Piatas by David Goujon
Where: Edward Rendon St. Park, 2101 Jesse E. Segovia St, Austin, TX 78702
When: October 9 - November 22

From the artist's statement:
During National Hispanic Heritage month in October, visitors will discover two massive piata burros grazing in a field in east Austin. In response to the Lejarazu family having their piata store, Jumpolin, razed to the ground with their personal belongings and merchandise inside in February 2015, every act of creation begins as a form of destruction and every city will see parts of itself die as it grows and expands.

The Public Sentiment Campaign
by Jennifer Chenoweth and Dorothy Johnson
Where: Various locations throughout the city.
When: August 28, 2015- January 4th, 2016
A campaign of four whimsical signs and collected personal narratives will engage viewers visiting Austin parks. Personal quotes from anonymous survey responses are embedded into the artwork. Images of interactions are shared through social media via @xyzatlas. Playful signage allows viewers to investigate the meaning of life experiences, and gives context on how people connect with visual concepts, each other and themselves.

Project Spotlight

Uplifted Ground by Michael Singer Studio
A new, large-scale public art installation will soon be complete at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport! Michael Singer Studio was selected to create a unique experience for the new Consolidated Rental Car Facility (CONRAC). Uplifted Ground consists of hundreds of cast concrete sculptures embedded with abstract forms inspired by aerial imagery of Texas and granite from the local Llano Uplift.
The artwork is exceptionally intricate, and is lit from within to provide a subtle glow at night. It is being placed along a 300' pathway across the top level of the existing parking garage connecting the terminal to the CONRAC. This complicated project is being installed by local rigging company, Shur-Rig, with support from Michael Singer Studio.

SAVE THE DATE: The airport will celebrate the new CONRAC and new art installation at a public ceremony on October 28, 2015. Look for details in our October newsletter.
South Central Waterfront Design Workshops
The South Central Waterfront Initiative held design workshops between September 1st and 3rd, with many opportunities for the public to weigh in on design direction for the area. On September 2nd, AIPP staff and three Austin artists participated in the Placemaking & Identity workshop, to support the inclusion of the arts in the district.
A concept was shared to make the area an Artisan District, so that all street furniture, lighting, and building details, such as door pulls or elevator interiors, would be created by Austin artists and artisans. This idea originated at an Artist Round Table held for this project in April 2014. In addition, discussion included planning for an engaging multi-use urban area near the Congress Avenue Bridge while retaining the natural experience of the lakefront; inclusion of flexible pop-up market space in retail areas; retention/creation of effective wildlife corridors; and an emphasis on multi-modal transportation. Thanks to Ann Armstrong, Lucy Begg and Dharmesh Patel for their participation!
