2015 - 2017 Pre-Qualified Artist Pool
Art in Public Places is happy to announce the 2015 - 2017 Pre-Qualified Artist Pool. Earlier this year, AIPP released a Request for Qualifications for a Pre-Qualified Artist Pool to provide a streamlined application and selection process for artists interested in being commissioned for AIPP public art projects.
Click here to view the Pre-Qualified Pool

Out of the 497 applicants, 84 were selected by the Selection Panel to be part of the 2015-2017 Artist Pool. 26 of the selected artists are from Texas and, of that group, 23 artists are from Austin. The AIPP Panel will use the Pre-Qualified Pool to select artists for future artwork opportunities; however, selecting from the Pool is not the exclusive way for artists to be considered for artwork commissions. The Pre-Qualified Pool list is available to the public, and may be used as a resource for developers, arts organizations, and other commissioning entities.

Artists or artist teams from the Pool may be contracted to design and fabricate artwork for eligible Capital Improvement Projects of various scopes, timelines, and budgets throughout the City of Austin. Artwork budgets are expected to range from $20,000 to $300,000.

TEMPO 2015

The intent for the 2015 edition of AIPP's temporary art program, TEMPO, is to cultivate curiosity, spark imagination, foster work by local Austin artists, engage the community in a meaningful public art dialogue and cultivate tourism. Artists were asked to propose site-specific, short-term artwork or time-based performances in parkland spaces, libraries, streets and bridges, and in the public right-of-way as determined by the artist in conversation with the City of Austin.

Knot by George Sabra

One of the selected artists is George Sabra, who has designed a freestanding sculpture, titled Knot, consisting of approximately twenty reclaimed 55-gallon oil drum barrels fabricated into an 11-foot tall knot formation.

From the artist's statement: "This sculpture lends itself to deepen public awareness of climate change. The emissions from burning fossil fuels is one of the roots causes of global warming."

The sculpture will be on display:
October 2-12 at the Austin Convention Center during SXSWEco.
(SW corner of 4th St. and Trinity St.)
October 12 - November 7
at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility in time for National Re-Use Day Event on October 17th from 10 am to noon.
(2514 Business Center Drive, Austin, 78744)

Memorial by Olivia Martin Moore
Olivia Martin Moore has proposed a sculpture which will recognize the eight

convicts who died at Convict Hill Quarry Park, while quarrying limestone rock to build the Texas State Capitol.

The artist will create an architectural folly reminiscent of a jail cell and will place the sculpture at the center of Convict Hill Quarry Park off of the narrow walking path.

Starting August 17th, the sculpture will be on display at Convict Hill Quarry Park, 6511 Convict Hill Road, 78749.
