You're Invited! Art in Public Places' 30th Birthday
AIPP - 30 years 1985-2015
AIPP 30: Art Party for the People!
When: Sunday, November 15th from 2-4 p.m.
Where: Open Room Austin, 200 Sandra Muraida Way, 78701
Austin Art in Public Places is celebrating 30 years of spectacular and surprising public art all around Austin! Grab a friend and join us and some special guests at one of our city's most iconic public art pieces: Open Room Austin (which may be better known as the giant picnic table near the Seaholm Power Plant). Click here for Facebook event page!

Just like all our public art in Austin, this event is free and open to the public! Fun for the entire family, find a spot at our pop-up party's picnic table, grab a refreshment from participating local businesses, all while taking in a tune. We can't wait to celebrate our big 3-0 with you!

For 30 years, AIPP has provided Austin with a unique identity that makes our town special. From Iron Wave to Nightwing, AIPP has commissioned over 200 public art pieces - many which you've seen, but might not have realized it - in all 10 of Austin's districts! AIPP's mission to bring art to the people isn't just a hope, it's a reality. Want to know more about our programs, our art and our upcoming exhibitions? Visit austintexas.gov/department/art-in-public-places.
Project Spotlight

TEMPO 2015
The intent for the 2015 edition of AIPP's temporary art program, TEMPO, is to cultivate curiosity, spark imagination, foster work by local artists, engage the community in a meaningful public art dialogue and cultivate tourism. A Request for Proposals went out in March 2015 asking for site-specific, short-term artwork or time-based performances in designated areas of Austin, including parkland spaces, libraries, streets and bridges, right-of-way, and other sites to be determined.

Born and Bread by Annelize Machado
Artist Annelize Machado chose, in her words, "to celebrate older adults as gifted, contributing members of the community" through her TEMPO artwork, entitled Born and Bread. Annelize created workshop for area seniors that explore dance, craft and story telling at The Old Bakery and Emporium, located at 10th Street and Congress Ave. She created a film of these captured experiences and invites the public to view the film on four nights in November and December.

Born and Bread will be projected onto the exterior wall of The Old Bakery and Emporium on four Saturday evenings, Nov. 14 & 12 and Dec. 5 & 12. There will be six screenings of the short film each evening, at 6:15pm; 6:45pm; 7:15pm; 7:45pm; 8:15pm; and 8:45pm. The December 5th screenings will take place during the TEMPO 2015 Closing Celebration, in conjunction with the Downtown Austin Alliance Holiday Stroll 2015. Please join the artist at one of these events!

Migration
by Ethan Azarian
Sited at the Rosewood-Zaragosa Neighborhood Center, this mural interprets the developing story of this east Austin neighborhood. Artist Ethan Azarian's inspiration for Migration comes from witnessing changes in the neighborhood as an East Austin resident.
Artwork in the process of installation at the Rosewood-Zaragosa Neighborhood Center.
Depicting imagery from the early 1830's, when the majority of the area was farmland, to when the first churches were built, to the addition of electricity, and to the present-day influx of new buildings, Azarian uses whimsy and bright colors to interpret local history. Installed adjacent to the Little Hands Park playground, the mural is intended to complement this family friendly location.

The artwork will be in place from October 15, 2015 to January 7, 2016.

 Grant to Plant: District 8
After spending several weeks building mailboxes with district residents, Drawing Lines District 8 artists Patrick Bresnan and Ivete Lucas will next give residents from District 8 free plants using 1/3 of their grant budget, or $3333.33, to make the purchase. The artists will interact with people receiving the plants as a news crew. Award winning Austin actress and director Hannah Kenah will be performing as the news anchor.
Performance and Plant Give-Away
When: November 7th, 2015 at 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Brief recorded interviews with residents will cover topics such as the state of the natural environment, property taxes, crime and the school system. The day will culminate in live music at 5pm and free beer provided by Thirsty Planet Brewery.

Community memories are often captured through food and the rituals of the meals we share. The Cherry Creek Community Garden is located within a flood plane where 25 houses once stood before a devastating flood. For her project, Drawing Lines District 5 artist Sonya Cote commemorated the lost 25 houses by building a 25-foot long communal table from wood salvaged from the Bastrop fires in 2011, and by holding a community supper based on local recipes.
