Project Spotlight
|
|
The intent for the 2015 edition of AIPP's temporary art program, TEMPO, is to cultivate curiosity, spark imagination, foster work by local artists, engage the community in a meaningful public art dialogue and cultivate tourism. A Request for Proposals went out in March 2015 asking for site-specific, short-term artwork or time-based performances in designated areas of Austin, including parkland spaces, libraries, streets and bridges, right-of-way, and other sites to be determined.
One of the successful proposers was artist Juan Deleon, who was selected to bring his artwork, Omission, to five locations in Austin starting in October 2015.
Paraphrasing from the artist's statement:
Omission is the deletion of open space. Omission is made up of 20 ten-foot diameter inflatable white spheres arranged in varying configurations. The inflatable spheres manipulate the park land by consuming the openness. The landscape is obscured and "omitted" by the large forms.
There may be as many as twenty spheres in an installation, or there may be fewer than ten, depending upon the available space and surroundings.
Watch this newsletter for more TEMPO 2015 project descriptions in the coming months!

Hello Lamp Post: Austin - The Results
| |
From February 12 to April 27, 2015, residents and visitors of Austin were treated to the unique experience of talking to objects in the urban landscape via text message! In celebration of our 30th anniversary, AIPP commissioned PAN Studio to bring the award-winning Hello Lamp Post to Austin.
With the help of our project partner, Art Alliance Austin, we reached 2,975 individual players who sent over 21,000 text messages to over 2,000 unique objects around town. Find out more information about this playful project at www.austintexas.gov/page/hello-lamp-post-austin.

Trees were among the most popular objects "woken up" during the 10-week project. Here are some sample conversations:
Tree #5601
Q: How friendly would we have to be for you to hug me?
A: About this friendly, since I already hugged you. Sorry I didn't ask first.
Treaty Oak
Q: What's the best thing about today so far?
A: Talking to an amazing tree.
Battle Oaks, on the campus of the University of Texas
Q: I know this sounds vain, but do we look old?
A: You DO look old! You look like the oldest, wisest oaks of all!
