Project Spotlight: Brazos Street Sounds

Brazos Street Sounds by Austin-based Sodalitas Art Group is currently in fabrication and will be installed along Brazos Street in downtown Austin this summer.

Parts of the Listening Station being made using a water-jet cutting process. The Listening Station will house the speakers that allow the view to hear sounds along Brazos Street.

The project consists of 12 microphone tubes and 12 speaker tubes that capture and play back the sounds of the streetscape.  Infrastructure for the project, including speaker and electrical wires, were installed during the Brazos Street reconstruction project.

Some elements of the artwork are curved which is achieved using this metal rolling machine.
From the artists' narrative: The intention of the project "... is to create a platform for audio play and experimentation within the streetscape. With the aid of microphones and speakers, we will create the illusion of connection between twelve places along Brazos St to a central, semi circular bench area where the audio from all twelve microphones pipes can be experienced simultaneously."
Pipe cutting machine used to create the microphone and speaker tubes. Tubes to be painted in shades of blue.

Artwork Donation: In Progress
Larry Monroe Forever mosaic

The Art in Public Places program works with people who wish to donate artwork to the City of Austin through the Artwork Donation / Loan Policy. AIPP recently worked with a collection of  friends who wished to make a public art project to commemorate Larry Monroe, a well-known local DJ who died in 2014.

Headed by Monroe's partner Ave Bonar, the group is collaborating on the creation of a mosaic that will be installed in May on the sides of a bridge in Little Stacy Park, pictured above.

Tile making workshops have been held at lead artist Stefanie Distefano's studio on a regular basis for the last several months to create the tiles for the mosaic. Distefano has installed other mosaics throughout Austin, including Flamingo Mitote at Patterson Park.

The donation proposal was approved by the Arts Commission in December 2014, after a thorough staff review by representatives from AIPP, the Public Works Department, and the Transportation Department.

New Artwork at the Airport
Checkerburst and Shock Egg by artist Eric Eley are sculptures commissioned as part of the Spirit of Austin Lane Cell Phone Lot at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

In the artist's words, "...the artworks are inspired by vapor cones (also called 'shock eggs'), a phenomenon that can occur as a flying object approaches supersonic speeds". Shock Egg, pictured above, is constructed of a lattice of stainless steel rod, which has a cone of hammered bronze that pushes back through the surface.
Checkerburst
, above, has a silhouette similar to Shock Egg, but is larger and more volumetric. As viewers pass by on foot or in cars, the viewer's perception of the piece moves between dimensions as the gridded openings align and flatten the volume of the sculpture.

Take a moment to check out these new sculptures next time you are at the airport!
