Project Spotlight - Michael Singer
A new consolidated rental car facility (CONRAC) is nearing completion at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The AIPP project associated with the facility, titled Uplifted Ground by artist Michael Singer, is currently in fabrication.
Artist Michael Singer alongside a mock-up of Uplifted Ground, testing placement of sculptural elements to be installed at the new rental car facility.  There will be hundreds of these elements installed in the final artwork.

The notion of uplifting has many meanings from the nearby Llano Uplift geological formation, to the uplift of aircraft and perhaps, the uplifting of one's spirit.
Detail of texture for concrete elements; the texture was derived from central Texas geological formations, Texas minerals, and patterning from regional aerial photography.

Uplifted Ground will transform a 300'+ walkway connecting the airport

terminal to the rental car facility through a combined abstraction of hundreds of earth-toned grounded and suspended elements, flanked by similarly colored and patterned walls.
Materials for the sculptural elements also include copper, shown above, and aluminum. Light will emerge from some of the pieces as night falls.

Collection Repairs

Spring cleaning for Texas Botanicals by Jill Bedgood

The paintings, commissioned in 1998 for the Austin Convention Center, received a minor treatment last month after staff noticed unusual white streaks on one of the panels.

AIPP called in Mark Van Gelder, an Austin-based painting conservator. Mark used a scissor lift to examine the top of the 8-foot-high painting, and expertly removed the streaks. The culprit? Turns out an errant pigeon

had landed on top of the painting and left a calling card. Luckily, the acidic excrement was removed before it could eat away the paint.
