Public Art Panel Discussion &

Artist Workshop Review

"A Trio of Public Art Voices" Panel Discussion and "Voices of Experience" Public Art Workshop

On November 7 and 8, AIPP presented a weekend of public art voices, notably national experts Norie Sato, an artist based in Seattle; Janet Zweig, an artist based in Brooklyn; and Shelly Willis, the executive director of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission.

Friday night's panel discussion took place at Austin Studios and was attended by visual artists and arts administrators from all over Texas. Sato and Zweig shared some of their past work. The panel talked about the intersection of local identity and artwork, public participation, and the artist's role in promoting public dialogue.

Saturday's workshop, which was held at the Entrepreneur Center of Austin, focused on tips and advice from these professionals and on honest dialogue about their public art practice. After a presentation by the panelists, the participanting artists broke into small groups to ask questions and discuss practical public art issues with the panelists. Thanks to all who came out to these events!

Project Spotlight

Time Lines by Mikyoung Kim

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

Time Lines, designed for the airport by Boston-based artist Mikyoung Kim, is currently being installed and is expected to be complete next month. It will be located in the new customs area (lower level) of the Terminal East Infill  Project.

From the artists' description: Airports are a place where time is ambiguous and travel across multiple time zones further blurs that sense of time and order.

Time Lines offers travelers a sense of arrival to a locale with vibrant colors and dynamic transformations, while highlighting the fluid

nature of time in global travel.

Local installers, Imagecraft Exhibits, recently completed installation of the hardware, including three test panels to ensure the installation methods will be successful.

Recent Collection Repairs
Sanctuary of the Tribal Alligator, by Texas artist T. Paul Hernandez, recently received a much needed face lift. Created in 1988 for a school playground, it's one of the earliest pieces commissioned by AIPP. This cast cement sculpture/interactive playscape has seen a lot of love from children over the years.

Silver Lining Art Conservation team filled cracks, patched areas where the surface had flaked off, restored the original rusty brown color, and answered a lot of questions from curious children.

Detail of damage.
Reach for Your Dreams by Ambray Gonzales also received minor cleaning and repairs from Silver Lining Art Conservation. The crew removed graffiti and repaired a few small areas where pieces had broken off the sculpture.
Detail of repair.
Reach for Your Dreams, a hand-carved, 9-foot-tall limestone
sculpture created in 2002, is located at Montopolis Youth Sportsplex, in the Roy G. Guerrero Park. Next step will be a more thorough cleaning to remove the black particles that have settled on the surface, which will eventually erode the limestone if not removed.

AIPP Panel at Work
The Art in Public Places (AIPP) program has a close working relationship with the overseeing body, the AIPP Panel. Made up of seven volunteers with professional backgrounds in the visual arts, the panel brings expertise and experience to the artwork approval process.
The AIPP Panel reviewing artwork at one of their regular meetings, which take place on the first Monday of every month.
The current panel includes artists, an architect, a landscape architect and the liaison to the Austin Arts Commission. The panel reviews each artist's project throughout the design phase, giving feedback both on the aesthetic direction of the artwork and on practical issues of fabrication, installation and maintenance.
The 2014 AIPP Panel Retreat took place at the inspirational Charles Moore Foundation in Austin.
In addition, to strengthen the link between each project and the panel, each panelist serves as a project liaison for several AIPP artworks during the design process. The AIPP Panel approves the final design for each project before it goes to the Austin Arts Commission for approval. For more information on the process of the AIPP program, please check out the Art in Public Places program guidelines!

If you are interested in applying to fill a future vacancy on the Art in Public Places Panel, please submit your application here.
