Open Calls to Artists

REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS:

Airport Entrance Project

at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

Budget: $2,000,000

 

The City of Austin Art in Public Places (AIPP) program of the Cultural Arts Division, Economic Development Department, seeks to commission a professional visual artist or artist team to design, fabricate, and install artwork for the Airport Entrance AIPP project at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Professional visual artists or artist teams who live in the United States are eligible to apply. The total budget available for this project is $2,000,000.

DEADLINE: Thursday, October 16, 2014, 5:00 pm (CST) 

REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS: 

Austin Police Department (APD) Mounted Patrol Facility 

Budget: $53,000

 

The City of Austin Art in Public Places (AIPP) program of the Cultural Arts Division, Economic Development Department, seeks to commission a professional visual artist, or artist team, to design, fabricate, and install artwork for the APD Mounted Patrol Facility located on 88 acres at 11400 McAngus Road in far southeast Austin (Del Valle), adjacent to the highly-frequented Circuit of the Americas track. It is desired that the artwork be visible to cars passing by on McAngus Road and/or contribute to the sustainability goals of the project. Professional visual artists, or artist teams, who live and work in Williamson, Travis, Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Burnet and Blanco counties are eligible to apply. The total budget available for this project is $53,000.

An Artist Information Meeting will be held on Thursday September 25, 2014 at 5:30 p.m., at the Cultural Arts Division Offices (201 E. 2nd St., Austin, TX 78701.)

AIPP Open Office Hours 

Where: Cultural Arts Division offices (201 E. 2nd Street)   

When: Friday, September 12, between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.

Topic: Open/Current Calls to Artists

Free parking available in the Austin Convention Center garage at 2nd and Brazos; we can validate your parking if you park in this garage.

 

AIPP staff will be available for informal meetings with artists and arts professionals interested i or any other topic related to public art in Austin. No appointment necessary!

Public Art Dedication

Please join us for the grand opening of the improved Auditorium Shores Trailhead. We will be dedicating the newest addition to the Art in Public Places collection, Cyclical Interplay, by artists Andrew Bellatti Green and Adam Pyrek.This kinetic sculpture changes daily, reflecting the rainfall and water levels in central Texas from data collected by Watershed Protection Department. Join us for a Public Art Crawl
Austin Museum Day 2nd Street Public Art Crawl

When: September 21, 10:00 a.m.

Where: Meet on the southwest side of City Hall Plaza, 301 W. 2nd St.

As part of the city-wide Austin Museum Day, Art in Public Places will host a tour of public art in the 2nd Street District. During the tour, we will also share the latest on the public art planned for the Seaholm District.The guided crawl starts at City Hall at 10 a.m. RSVP here. You can also download a public art map and explore on your own!   

 
Mark Schatz's artwork, Nobody Writes Poetry About the Trinity, catalogs the artist's observations about what remains of the rich and varied habitat of the Trinity River basin..

People's Gallery logoWe're calling out to Austin-area artists, arts organizations, and galleries to submit works for inclusion in the 2015 People's Gallery exhibition at City Hall!

Austin AIPP collection online
Art in Public Places program is now on the national public art database and mobile website, Public Art Archive, which provides information about public artworks throughout the United States. Now you can search and map the AIPP collection, as well as donations and temporary artworks, on your computer and mobile device!

 

Project Spotlight
Drinking Grove by Lars Stanley in process

Artist and architect Lars Stanley is working on his artwork to be installed next year at the northeast corner of Congress Avenue and 2nd Street.

 

Drinking Grove will be a grouping of abstracted cypress trees, fabricated from fabric-formed concrete and tapering stainless steel forms. The artwork will incorporate shallow stainless steel saucers, which will serve as a drinking fountain for thirsty passers-by.   

 

 

Drinking Grove is one of many public artworks along 2nd Street that were part of a 2006 public art master plan by artist Barbara Grygutis. Many of the works are now in place - join us on Austin Museum Day, September 21. to learn more about them. Meet on the southwest side of City Hall Plaza, 301 W. 2nd St, at 10 a.m. to join the tour.

Creative Placemaking Seminars & Speaker Series

 

The Cultural Arts Division invites the community to a series of public events to learn more about the creative placemaking and how it can be applied here in Austin.

This speaker series will bring national experts to give public presentations on different aspects of the creative placemaking process. The final talk in this series will take place on September 18 and will be presented by Mark Stern.

Americans for the Arts (AFTA)  Placemaking and Cultural Districts Webinar Week

These webinars are free for AFTA members. If you are not a member, we invite you to join us at the Cultural Arts Division offices for three 45 minute webinars and learn ways that communities are using cultural, arts and entertainment districts as tools for community revitalization and placemaking. Focus on Good: Project Based Workshop - Create Your Own Film with Lights. Camera. Help.

When: October 3, 17, 31, & November 14

Throughout this 8-week, 4 workshop course, you will receive the skills and resources you need to make a film that tells your non-profit organization's story-the right way. No experience or special equipment is required for this workshop series.This workshop series is limited to 5 organizations, each of which can send up to 3 staff members. TCA Statewide Conference - Registration is Open

When: January 29 & 30, 2015

TCA's conference, State of the Arts: Engaging New Audiences will take place in Austin, Texas at the Sheraton Austin Hotel at the Capitol on January 29 & 30, 2015. This powerful two-day gathering is aimed at art administrators, arts education providers, staff of cultural institutions, board members and trustees of art organizations, and interested others. The Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2015 and 2016 positions of:  

  • Texas State Musician
  • Texas State Poet Laureate
  • Texas State Visual Artists 2-D
  • Texas State Visual Artists 3-D

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PANEL MEETINGS

The AIPP Panel usually meets at 6:00 p.m. on the first Monday of every month at City Hall, room 1029, however during July, August and September of 2014, meetings will be held in the Cultural Arts Division Training Room at 201 E. 2nd Street. Come see artists presenting their design work, listen as panel members discuss upcoming opportunities for public art, and see how the whole process happens from start to finish!

 

AUSTIN ARTS COMMISSION MEETINGS
The Arts Commission usually meets at 5:30 p.m. on the third Monday of every month at City Hall, Council Chambers. After the AIPP Panel votes on a project or an upcoming opportunity, the Austin Arts Commission reviews their work and decides which projects and opportunities move forward.
