Calls to Artists - Save the Date
Please save the date for an Artist Information Meeting for two upcoming national Calls to Artists at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport:

1. Monumental scale exterior artwork opportunity at the entrance to the airport.

 

2. Significant interior artwork opportunity located in an expansion of the airport terminal.

 

Call Release Date: 8/19/14

Art After Six @ The People's Gallery

Stop by The People's Gallery at City Hall for extended gallery hours and talks by artists from the 2014 exhibition! Artist talks begin at 6:15 pm in Boards & Commissions room. The first three floors of City Hall will be open for self-guided tours 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Pick up a gallery guide on the first floor!

We're calling out to Austin-area artists, arts organizations, and galleries to submit works for inclusion in the 2015 People's Gallery exhibition at City Hall!

AIPP Open Office Hours 

Where: Cultural Arts Division offices (201 E. 2nd Street)   

When: Friday, August 15, between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m

Topic: How to Use PublicArtist.org

 

AIPP staff will be available for informal meetings with artists and arts professionals interested in "How to Use PublicArtist.org" or any other topic related to public art in Austin. No appointment necessary!

 


Get staff tips on developing your studio practice into a public art career and, while you're here, pick up the updated Artist Resource Guide 2014 to learn about the City's public art process!  

 

Project Spotlight
Creativity and Culture: A Celebration by Werllayne Nunes

On July 30th, we celebrated the installation of artwork by Werllayne Nunes for the wayfinding obelisco located at E. 7th St. and Northwestern Ave. This marks the completion of a streetscape improvement project that began ten years ago.

The four artwork panels by Nunes, entitled "Creativity and Culture: A Celebration", are rendered in mineral paint on cement board and they honor the vibrant cultural arts of the African-American community in East Austin.

TEMPO Artwork Recognized

Amy Scofield's Treevolution, a public artwork originally commissioned through the TEMPO 2013/14 program, has been awarded first place in the Dallas-based Art on Henderson competition.

 Scofield's playful sculpture with a serious environmental message was given the top honor by a panel of jurors and selected from among seven finalists. The artwork will be on display for two years along Henderson Avenue in Dallas.

Creative Placemaking Seminars & Speaker Series

 

The Cultural Arts Division invites the community to a series of public events to learn more about the creative placemaking and how it can be applied here in Austin.

This speaker series will bring three national experts to give public presentations on different aspects of the creative placemaking process.

Americans for the Arts (AFTA)  Placemaking and Cultural Districts Webinar Week 

When: September 10-12.

These webinars are free for AFTA members. If you are not a member, we invite you to join us at the Cultural Arts Division offices for three 45 minute webinars and learn ways that communities are using cultural, arts and entertainment districts as tools for community revitalization and placemaking. Focus on Good: Project Based Workshop - Create Your Own Film with Lights. Camera. Help.

When: October 3, 17, 31, & November 14

Throughout this 8-week, 4 workshop course, you will receive the skills and resources you need to make a film that tells your non-profit organization's story-the right way. No experience or special equipment is required for this workshop series.This workshop series is limited to 5 organizations, each of which can send up to 3 staff members. TCA Statewide Conference - Registration is Open

When: January 29 & 30, 2015

TCA's conference, State of the Arts: Engaging New Audiences will take place in Austin, Texas at the Sheraton Austin Hotel at the Capitol on January 29 & 30, 2015. This powerful two-day gathering is aimed at art administrators, arts education providers, staff of cultural institutions, board members and trustees of art organizations, and interested others. Art in the Texas State Parks: Arts Education Proposals

Deadline: 8/25/14

VSA Texas has been invited to partner with the Texas State Parks to create accessible and educational arts programs in the state parks. We are looking for artists who live close to a state park and who have an idea for a lesson that could be done in an outdoor space or an interpretive center. This could be visual art, dance, theater, or music. For adults or children. Artist instructors would be paid. Contact April Sullivan at april@vsatx.org or 512-454-9912 for more information.

Deadline for nominations: 10/15/14

The Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2015 and 2016 positions of:  

  • Texas State Musician
  • Texas State Poet Laureate
  • Texas State Visual Artists 2-D
  • Texas State Visual Artists 3-D

The City of Austin Art in Public Places program acquires and maintains works of art for City facilities and parks through commissions, donations and loans for the cultural enrichment of the Austin community. ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PANEL MEETINGS

The AIPP Panel usually meets at 6:00 p.m. on the first Monday of every month at City Hall, room 1029, however during July, August and September of 2014, meetings will be held in the Cultural Arts Division Training Room at 201 E. 2nd Street. Come see artists presenting their design work, listen as panel members discuss upcoming opportunities for public art, and see how the whole process happens from start to finish!

 

AUSTIN ARTS COMMISSION MEETINGS
The Arts Commission usually meets at 5:30 p.m. on the third Monday of every month at City Hall, Council Chambers. After the AIPP Panel votes on a project or an upcoming opportunity, the Austin Arts Commission reviews their work and decides which projects and opportunities move forward.
