2nd Street artwork installations underway
In 2004, commissioned artist Barbara Grygutis worked with the 2nd St. Streetscape design team to create a public art master plan for the corridor. She selected "Rivers, Streams and Springs" as the unifying artwork theme, since the cross streets are named after Texas rivers. Seven sidewalk enhancements were commissioned at intersections to reflect the referenced rivers and three sculptural "springs projects" were commissioned which incorporate water. This month two more of the planned artworks are being installed.
Currency, located along 2nd Street at San Jacinto, addresses the socio-political issues surrounding humanity's need for water to survive and grow, and the effect that growth has on water. The San Jacinto River enabled the transportation of goods, spurring economic growth, but became polluted as a result of this commerce.
Currency uses bronze coins to represent 1) the ecosystem that encouraged economic growth and 2) the industries that decimated the ecosystem by contaminating the water.

Aquifer by Philip Lamb and Susan Magilow
Aquifer, by Susan Magilow & Philip Lamb is located between Brazos and San Jacinto Streets. It is a serpentine row of photographic imagery embedded in tempered glass which represents the limestone-fault structure of an aquifer and includes a drinking fountain.
As one bends to get a drink, the photographic representation of water on the panels visually align.
Look for both of these artworks to be completed very soon!
