JUNE 2014

Greetings, artists and arts supporters!

We are sending you this newsletter to let you know about the latest activities of AIPP as well as upcoming opportunities!

Celebrate with a Splash!

Three of Austin's public pools have recently completed improvements. It's time to celebrate the completion of these projects, including the AIPP commissioned artworks installed at each pool! Hope you can join the celebrations!

Water Tower Bike Rack by Alan Knox

Where: Westenfield Neighborhood Pool at 2800 Enfield Road

When: Friday, June 13th at 11 a.m.

Artist Alan Knox designed this sculpture to be a functional bike rack and a symbolic passageway to pool beyond. The 15-foot-tall perforated steel tower creates a canopy under which pool visitors may pass as they move between the park and the pool area. It provides a moment of shade along the trail and is able to park ten bicycles.

Blue Gate by Casey D. Cooper

Where: Bartholomew Park Municipal Pool at 1800 East 51st Street

When: Saturday, June 14th at 10 a.m.

In creating this artwork, artist Casey D. Cooper welded sheets of steel along the edges, creating envelopes that inflate when injected with superheated air. The inflated pieces were then welded into a cohesive whole: an entrance gate that weighs over 600 pounds, but looks like a large blow-up pool float. The triangles at the top, in particular, suggest children's water wings.

Detail of the enameled steel sphere during fabrication

Artwork (working title) by Hawkeye Glenn

Where: Barton Springs Pool (south entrance off of Robert E. Lee)
When: Wednesday, June 25th at 10 a.m.

Art in Public Places commissioned artist Hawkeye Glenn to create a sculptural seating artwork for Barton Springs Pool. Glenn fabricated the artwork from native Texas pink granite and native limestone, integrating it into the landscape. Mounted off-center on the seating area is a rounded closed steel sphere, enameled in porcelain with the colors of water, sky and earth, connecting the artwork to the Springs.

YMCA names AIPP
 Community Partner of the Year

Meghan Wells (left) and  Carrie Brown (right) with the award.

At their Annual Meeting on May 14, 2014, the YMCA of Austin presented Art in Public Places with the Community Partner of the Year Award. The award was accepted by project coordinator Carrie Brown and Art in Public Places administrator Meghan Wells.

In 2012, Art in Public Places commissioned local artists Lucy Begg and Robert Gay of Thoughtbarn to design and implement a community garden at the North Austin Community Recreation Center. During the course of the project, the artists worked extensively with the local community, through workshops and public events, to develop the design of the garden. The garden was created in partnership with the YMCA of Austin, and with the support of the Sustainable Urban Agriculture & Community Garden Program of the Parks and Recreation Department and Sustainable Food Center.

Austin-based creative agency Flow Nonfiction was commissioned to create a short documentary film about the project. The completed film, GARDEN, is now available to view online: http://youtu.be/pboleS3hLbQ

Project Spotlight

Auditorium Shores Trailhead project
Artists Andrew Bellatti Green and Adam Pyrek are in the process of fabricating their sculpture for the Auditorium Shores Trailhead Project, currently under construction on the south shore of Lady Bird Lake, near the intersection of First Street and Riverside Drive. In accordance with the project goals, the artists are creating a work which addresses the concept of climate change and its impact on Central Texas.
The piece is comprised of curved weathering steel fins, pictured above, to be installed at the perimeter of two concentric rings.

Fins being fitted, above

As the fins rotate, the profile of the vessels expands and contracts, implying fullness and emptiness. The resting position of the fins changes daily, dependent on rainfall and water levels. The position of the prominent outside fins reflects several days of rain data collected on-site. Alternatively, the position of the more concealed interior fins displays long-term lake levels.
This sculpture to be installed soon!
