Newest public artwork now graces Austin streetscape

2nd St_Schatz

Nobody Writes Poetry About the Trinity by Mark Schatz

For this sculpture made of cast concrete, the sidewalk is modeled after the topography of the Trinity River basin and is designed to collect and funnel rainwater via a thin stream in the form of the Trinity River.  In this way, it pays homage to the Trinity's ability to continuously renew itself within a changing cultural landscape.
2nd St_Schatz
Despite suffering years of abuse by industry and individuals alike, the Trinity River has thus far defied complete domestication and remains ever-changing, tempestuous, and wild.
2nd St_Schatz
The text encircling the river topography catalogues the artist's observations in what remains of the rich and varied habitat through which the Trinity passes, including everything from discarded mattresses and a cremation tin, to the American White Pelican and Great Blue Heron.

Visit this art installation at the NW corner of 2nd Street and Trinity Avenue. Stay tuned - more 2nd Street artworks on the way!
