Leaf, Pod and Samara by John Christensen
 |
Trio of sculptures after repairs were completed.
|
This trio of large abstract sculptural forms, located at the Austin Bergstrom International Airport, has just received a much needed resurfacing.
 |
Leaf, prior to restoration
|
 |
Leaf, restored
| The cast concrete shapes, commissioned for and installed in the new airport in 1999, have suffered damage over the last decade from bird droppings and weathering, which caused surface discoloration, flaking, and pitting.
 |
Samara, restored
| This summer the artist sanded down the damaged areas, then applied new concrete and new coatings to make the surfaces smooth and shiny, and now well-protected from the elements. The difference is amazing!

Pedestrian Geometries coming soon to 3rd Street!

This fall, Austin artist Erin Curtis will be bring her rich and colorful architectural aesthetic to Austin's downtown through her commission for the 3rd St Streetscape Enhancement Project, a project of the Great Streets Development Program.

Constructed from more than 30 unique colors of glazed bricks, the sculptures will appear like bright fragments of historical architecture growing from the sidewalks, while also suggesting textiles and paintings with their complex and varied surfaces.
This is Erin's first public art project and, to make the transition to working in public space, she partnered with architect Nicole Blair of Studio 512, C.W. Oates Masonry Inc, and Elgin Butler, to realize the project. The sculptures will range in scale from "pet sized" (24 inches tall) to modestly monumental (10 feet tall).
After installation is complete, a total of 25 sculptures, from a suite of six iconic geometric forms, will march up eight blocks of 3rd Street, from Trinity to Nueces.
Next month, Erin will have an exhibition of new work, some of which was inspired by Pedestrian Geometries, at the Gatehouse Gallery at Laguna Gloria. The exhibition, titled Furthest West, will be open from September 5, 2013- January 5, 2014. |

Detail photo of mosaic and edge of granite fountain. |
At the center of the lotus sits a hand-carved granite fountain with gently flowing water, included for its positive feng shui properties. The lotus flower was chosen as the inspiration for this work due to its cultural importance in many Asian countries. More on this exciting addition to the AIPP Collection in next month's newsletter!
