Artwork Dedication - Solar Tree

Join us as we officially welcome Solar Tree into the AIPP collection!

Friday, June 21, 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Dittmar Recreation Center, 1009 W. Dittmar Rd.

Solar Tree
, created by Austin artist Barna Kantor, is located at the Dittmar Recreation Center in south Austin. Solar Tree and its surrounding plaza was built to create a communal gathering place in front of the recreation center's newly-built gymnasium.

The tree harvests electricity while it provides shade, and sends data to a public website on the amount of energy generated. The shape of the plaza is formed by the tree's longest shadow, cast during the winter solstice. The artwork dedication will take place on the summer solstice which is the longest day of the year.

Artwork Dedication - Turtle Plaza
Join the celebration of Turtle Plaza by John Christensen!
Monday, July 1, 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metropolitan Park, 400 Grove Blvd.

Artist John Christensen was commissioned to design a number of elements for the City's new 365-acre park located on the south shore of the Colorado River, just east of Longhorn Dam.

The playground features several artist-designed play elements in the shape of turtles. Christensen and the Parks Department design team chose to emphasize the turtle because of the park's close proximity to the river, which is home to a booming turtle population, and because of the park's mission to educate
visitors about Austin's riparian ecosystem.

Christensen fabricated four turtles of cast concrete, a material that will allow for years of climbing on and playing by Austin kids. Smaller turtles are used as capitals at the entrance wall to the playground and pavilion. Working with the project design team from the outset, Christensen also designed a memorial plaza dedicated to Roy G. Guerrero, which features a pavilion and fountain.
Project Spotlight
Virginia Fleck installation at Pickfair Community Center!
Philip Rogers photograph

Austin artist Virginia Fleck's artwork was recently installed at the Pickfair Community Center in north Austin, a firehouse repurposed by the City of Austin in 2000 to fulfill the community's recreation needs. The center hosts popular programs for kids and families in its microgym and meeting spaces.

The artist's colorful graphic mandalas and flowers add dynamism to a high-energy play area and exterior courtyard. Fleck creates her art by collaging images from recycled trash bags and other printed consumer advertising. The collage is then photographed and reprinted by Agave Printers in east Austin. The resulting image is carefully laminated between two sheets of acrylic, after which a CNC (computer numeric controlled) router cuts it to a specified shape.

In February 2013, a Request for Artwork for Purchase was released to ten nominated professional visual artists based in Austin, for public artwork that would embody Pickfair Community Center's mission. Seven artists submitted for consideration proposals of current, existing artwork. Virginia Fleck was unanimously recommended by the selection panel, with Hank Waddell chosen as the alternate.
