Artist Christian Moeller is working on a design concept for Austin's new Central Library!
Artist Christian Moeller is in the process of designing a 37 foot high wall sculpture for Austin's new Central Library, which is scheduled to open in fall of 2016.
The piece will resemble a gigantic cuckoo clock with a swinging pendulum and a computer animation screen highlighting the image of a large black bird. The design responds to the prevalence of Austin's grackle population and to the importance of black birds in myth and literature. The artist hopes that the work will provide a strangely domestic element to the overall ambiance of the library.
"I was impressed with the pride Austin's citizens had about hosting a colony of bats under a bridge, creatures that would be called a pest in many other places. I also noticed the frequent presence of beautiful black birds I've never encountered before called Great-Tailed Grackles, some of whom demonstrated a unique kind of attitude towards their human co-habitants."
Christian Moeller was born in Germany and currently is a professor in the department of design/media arts at UCLA and operates his studio in Hollywood, California. His many media installations and artworks have been exhibited worldwide.

Christian Moeller, Shhh &, Portrait in 12 Volumes of Gray, 2010, books and powder coated steel; Public Library, Walnut Creek, California. A total of 3,960 empty sketchbooks in 12 shades of gray are placed in a 2-story tall bookshelf. The spines of the sketchbooks create the image of a librarian asking for silence. A small number of empty sketchbooks are available through the library's gift shop and when filled they can be exchanged for a new empty sketchbook from the sculpture. Eventually the sculpture becomes a container of the notes and memories of the community.

Christian Moeller, Daisy, 2008, robotic sculpture; Changi Airport, Singapore. A robotic arm randomly moves a cargo ship propeller made of fiberglass which is extended in the air above. Video cameras embedded in the base of the sculpture capture the presence of passersby, prompting Daisy to move and face her viewers.
