Repairs in Progress
Part of the Art in Public Places Program's ongoing work includes repair of the existing artwork in the City's collection. While extensive efforts are made through the planning process to minimize the potential for repairs, AIPP deals with vandalism, effects of bird droppings, accidents, sun/rain/freezing/thawing, issues with underlying infrastructure, etc.. This month, the spotlight is shining on some of the repair work currently in progress:
Leaf, Pod, and Samara by John Christensen This trio of large abstract sculptural forms, located at the Austin Bergstrom International Airport (in front of the west side of the terminal at ground level adjacent to the passenger pick up lane), will receive a resurfacing in late March. The cast-concrete shapes, commissioned for the new airport and installed in 1999, have suffered damage over the last decade by bird droppings and weathering. After installing a scaffolding to reach the higher areas of the sculpture, the artist plans to remove the damaged surface coating, and add a new sealant. The process will take about two weeks, to allow for proper drying and curing of the surface coating. Additionally, new plantings around the sculptures are planned for later this year. Big Chiller Blues by Ann Adams This award-winning wall, composed of glass tiles of various shades of blue, has adorned the exterior of the Austin Convention Center Parking Garage since the building was erected in 2005. The wall is a popular downtown destination for people who want a colorful backdrop for photographs. The breakage is due mainly to vandalism as well as structural issues with the sidewalk and wall. In mid-March, after SXSW wraps up, the sidewalk on Sabine Street will be shut down, the wall and sidewalk repaired, and the broken tiles replaced. The repair work will also include installation of new lighting, which we hope will deter vandalism by late-night revelers.
Open Room Austin by Rosario Marquardt and Roberto Behar Since its installation in spring 2010, the large, open-air picnic table surrounded by elegant candelabras known as Open Room Austin has been one of Austin's most popular outdoor sculptures. The work was designed with durable materials to withstand constant use, but even at the best garden parties sometimes things can get broken. We recently discovered one of the custom-made lampshades was cracked-possibly broken by an errant Frisbee?--so we have special ordered a replacement from the fabricator, John Grant, whose studio is located in Denver. We hope to have the new globe in place by the end of March. |
