AACHF Grand Opening
Grand Opening and Open House
Friday, March 1 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
912 E. 11th Street
Please join us for a community celebration for the City of Austin's new African American Cultural & Heritage Facility, which includes a new building, restoration of the Dedrick-Hamilton house (a historic structure which was home to the family of one of the first freed slaves in Travis County) and artwork by Reginald C. Adams!
Adams created a mosaic mural, titled Reflections, which features several vignettes depicting historical buildings, documents and events. In the center is a portrait of William T. Dedrick, the son of a freed slave and the former owner of the Dedrick-Hamilton house that is now the African American Visitor Bureau. The mural also includes portraits of people who made a significant contribution to the advancement of the African American community in Austin. RSVP
Art on View
Art and Labor
Ann Armstrong made a video about her process creating Stem Rack, the new bike rack sculpture located mid way between Congress Avenue and Brazos Street, on the south side of E. 2nd Street. The project began with a competition by the Downtown Austin Alliance which was sponsored by Thomas Properties Group. The Art in Public Places program managed the process of bringing the artwork to the streetscape.

Project Spotlight
Sharon Engelstein has been commissioned to do a child-engaging, family-friendly artwork for the 2nd Street Bridge and Extension (West Avenue to Shoal Creek) project.

Thanks to those of you who completed the survey a few months back, we have an idea of what child engaging public art means to Austin. Many of you sited specific works you've seen in your travels as examples of child engaging sculpture. All of this information has been gathered up into a PDF, located here.
Mustache, Big Blue Bear
Armed with this information, as well as the input from many stakeholder meetings, the artist is in the process of designing sculpture that will be inspiring to the imagination, touchable, physically engaging and safe. In addition, she is striving to make the artwork very low maintenance, in keeping with the requirements of the original call to artists.

Whatever form the sculpture takes, it is intended to be installed by early 2016, after the New Central Library and the new 2nd Street Bridge are in place in the Seaholm District!
