Tomorrow Mayor Leffingwell to declare October "Austin Creates" month!

October is "Austin Creates" Month!
Thursday October 11 at 5:30 p.m.
In recognition of Austin's thriving creative community and in conjunction with National Arts and Humanities Month, Mayor Lee Leffingwell will declare October "Austin Creates" Month.
The Mayor will present an official proclamation to Cultural Arts Program Manager Megan Crigger at the October 11 City Council meeting.

The proclamation will be announced at 5:30 p.m. at Austin City Hall, Council Chambers.

Celebrate the newest addition to the AIPP Collection this Saturday!

Uprooted Dreams by Margarita Cabrera
in collaboration with local participants
This Saturday (October 13) from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m.
(Artwork dedication starting at 5:00 p.m.)
Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (600 River Street)
Please come to the unveiling of this new community-created sculpture installation, based on the Mexican alebrije wood-carving tradition, will be part of the Center's 5th year anniversary celebration featuring live music and dance.

See the artwork, hear a bilingual presentation by the artist and her collaborators, and view two short films which document the creative process. Also presented will be a 56-page catalogue with an essay by Claudia Zapata, Curator of Exhibitions and Programs at Mexic-Arte Museum.
3:00 - 5:00pm: Open House for the 5th anniversary of the Center with music, dance and speakers from the community.
5:00 - 8:00pm: Welcoming remarks, blessing of artwork by Danza Azteca Guadalupana, ribbon cutting, FILMS AND PRESENTATION by Margarita Cabrera and her collaborators.

The City of Austin is currently seeking 2- and 3-dimensional artworks in any medium by Austin-area visual artists, galleries, or visual arts organizations for inclusion in The People's Gallery 2013 exhibition at City Hall.

Art After Six: Cliff Garten
Friday, November 2 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Austin City Hall

Internationally-recognized public artist Cliff Garten will discuss his process in creating the newest addition to AIPP's collection, Rhytons, a bronze sound sculpture located at the new Topfer Theatre on the ZACH Theatre campus. Cliff will also discuss how Rhytons fits into his body of work and what projects are coming up next for his studio. Please come to the Dedication for this artwork on 11/3 to see and hear Rhytons - details below!

Rhytons by Cliff Garten of Cliff Garten Studio Saturday, November 3 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. (tours of the new Topfer Theatre to follow) ZACH Theatre Campus 
Please come celebrate the dedication of Rhytons, a bronze sculpture by artist Cliff Garten. This is the first sculpture in the AIPP Collection incorporating interactive sound .
The dedication will also celebrate the opening of the new Topfer Theatre - come tour the new 467 seat facility and the Zach Scott Theatre campus!

Inflated steel gate for Bartholomew Municipal Pool

Artist Casey Cooper is fabricating an interactive sculpture to act as the entrance gate for the new bath houses planned as part of the renovations for Bartholomew Municipal Pool.

Casey received his MFA from Texas A&M Corpus Christi in 2011. He has been exploring forms using a process creating 'inflated steel' - the gate planned for Austin's collection will continue this exploration. Some of Cooper's inflated steel portfolio images follow:

Please join us for an artist reception to celebrate Jill Bedgood's newly created public art piece, Community Screen:Charms, at the Northwest Recreation Center, 2913 Northland Drive. You will have a chance to talk with the artist and discuss the work. Light refreshments will be served.
***** Upcoming Classes - Next Level Program
The Cultural Arts Division offers the Next Level Program in order to raise the capacity of local creative organizations, businesses, and individuals.
 Recent economic impact studies reveal that the creative sector in Austin accounts for over $4.35 billion in economic activity and almost 49,000 jobs, and continues to grow. Strengthening management, marketing, and fundraising skills is crucial for maintaining a strong and sustainable creative ecosystem.
Protecting Your Work: Intellectual Property Basics for Artists and Creative Types Tuesday, October 23 from 4:00 p.m to 6:30 p.m. This workshop, presented by Andrea Beleno-Harrington of Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid, will cover basic legal issues surrounding trademarks, copyrights (including works for hire), trade secrets, and patents; as well as, how to enforce your rights to your protected works. You will also receive a practical "guided tour" through state and federal trademark applications and copyright registration. Where:

Faces of Austin Call for Entries 2013
Does Austin inspire you?
There's just something about Austin that fuels creativity. Since 2005, the Faces of Austin program has showcased short films by local filmmakers, reflecting the diverse faces, voices, and experiences of our city.
The films selected for Faces of Austin 2013 will have a premiere screening during the SXSW Film Conference Community Screenings in March 2013. The films will be shown at Austin City Hall, on Channel 6, on the City website, and at special screenings throughout the year.
Share your inspiration and submit a short film by January 15, 2013 at 5 p.m.
