"Uprooted Dreams" Project

Austin Art in Public Places has commissioned El Paso-based artist Margarita Cabrera to create a community-based site-specific sculptural installation during the upcoming summer months at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC). She will collaborate with a local community group to create hand-painted wooden carvings informed by the traditional craft of alebrije-making, a folk art practice from Oaxaca, Mexico.

Armadillo by Sergio Santiago Ibanez & Lucila Sosa

Two skilled artisans from Oaxaca, will be in residence at the MACC, where they will share their expertise with the group and guide the process of carving and painting.  The public is invited to view the fabrication process which will take place in tents on the MACC grounds between June 25 and July 21.

For updated schedule information, call 974-9313 and to view the work of Margarita Cabrera, visit margaritacabrera.com. The finished clustered arrangement of woodcarvings will be permanently installed as "Uprooted Dreams" in the entrance to the MACC's education wing and is scheduled to be unveiled in Fall 2012.
