From The Director

Greetings!

Fall weather is perfect for the construction work that is in full force at Douglass Avenue.  In August, we demolished the decrepit house, cleared the property and poured the foundation.  This month we welcomed our Sandlot Gang (our most dedicated construction volunteers,) to ready the site for construction, and then held our first build weekend with employee volunteers from our generous sponsor, VHDA. Read more about Douglass below.

I hope you can join us for our Fall Picnic on October 6th, where we'll honor all of our volunteers, while enjoying food and fellowship with our staff and Habitat homeowners.  It's a family friendly, free event and we invite anyone who wants to learn more about Habitat.

In case you missed our print newsletter, filled with photos and updates on all of our work, read it here. If you want to add your address to our mailing list for future print mailings, update your profile with the link at the bottom of this email.

Many thanks for your continued support!

Rev. Jon Smoot

Executive Director

GMU Students Raise $9k for Habitat NOVA
Annual Shack-A-Thon Raises AwarenessSpringBuild

This Spring, George Mason University fraternities and sororities hosted the annual Shack-A-Thon. They constructed shacks on campus using only recyclable materials. Group members collected food and monetary donations during a 48-hour period, for a total of more than 8,000 pounds of food and $9,156.31.

This dynamic event, and all the work that is being done on campus during the year, helps us reach a new generation of decision makers and supporters, and brings awareness to the demand for decent, affordable home ownership.  Way to go GMU students!

Douglass Avenue Construction Begins with VHDA
NCLSponsor Sends Team for 2 Days

Volunteers from our sponsor, the Virginia Housing Development Authority, along with the future homeowners Muhsin Khalil and Amani Salih, began construction on the new home in Falls Church on Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21. This single family, 3-bedroom home will be our 81st new home built since 1990.

The team insulated the foundation walls, readied the crawl space, set first floor joists, laid the subfloor and began framing the first floor.

In case you missed the news about our build days, check out this article in the Falls Church News Press.
