ReStore in the News!

Fans of ReStore know that reusing building materials and furnishings is an economical way to update your home. From The Director

Greetings!

Welcome to a busy summer at Habitat for Humanity! On Tuesday, together with our staff, supporters, volunteers and community advocates, we took the first "hands on" step to building the new home on Douglass Avenue in Falls Church with a celebratory groundbreaking.  See photos from the event on our Facebook page, and check out this great coverage from News Channel 8

This single family, 3-bedroom home will be Habitat NoVa's 81st new home built since 1990.  To make the home a reality, we will need many volunteers: more than 1,500 to complete the job. Interested in volunteering? Click here to sign up.

I was delighted to introduce the future homeowners at the event: Muhsin Khalil and his wife Amani Salih. They came to America in 2002, escaping human rights violations in their native Sudan. The couple are now United States citizens and have four daughters, ages 7, 5, 3 and 1. The Khalil/Salih family is currently renting a two-bedroom apartment in Reston, and paying more in rent then they will with a Habitat for Humanity mortgage.

"Having a Habitat for Humanity home will give me and my children a better life," Muhsin Khalil said. "Before now, in order to find safety for my family, we moved a lot. We moved to many apartments. Now, my family will have stability. To come to America and find a home is a very good thing. Everyone has said how lucky we are. We love everyone and it seems that everyone loves us."

Habitat for Humanity is proud to be partnering with a number of companies in support of the new home on Douglass Avenue. The premier sponsor is E*TRADE Bank, with additional underwriting from the Stafford Foundation, Christopher Companies, Virginia Housing Development Authority and Capital One Bank.

In addition, we greatly rely on individual contributions so please consider supporting our Douglass Avenue build by making a secure online donation today.

Thank you for your support!

NCLVolunteers Do Repairs, Help at ReStore

We are so pleased to partner with the City of Falls Church and Falls Church Presbyterian Church to provide critical repairs on the historic 1850s Ives House, through a Community Development Block Grant. Volunteers have already began repairs.

We started demolition work at the Saguaro Place property in Centreville
this month, with a great group of employee volunteers from Jones Lang Lasalle.  The crew spent a day tearing out rooms of rotted drywall.

Did You Know?
Donating Stock Offers A Double Tax AdvantageSpringBuild
Dear Habitat Herald,
I've heard that there is a tax advantage to donating stock to Habitat NoVA.  Is that true?
Feeling Bearish in Alexandria

Dear Bearish,
Yes.  Gifts of stock can provide you, the donor, with a double tax benefit, while providing the much needed financial support for us to continue our mission.

If the donated stock has increased in value from the time of purchase, you, the donor, can avoid paying the capital gains tax by donating the stock to a charity. When the security is being donated to a charitable organization, the total amount of the final gift will be eligible for a tax deduction.

As an example, let's say you were looking to make a $1,000 donation to a charity. You could either give cash or donate stock. Let's assume that the you bought stock for a original purchase price of $600, but it is now worth $1,000. Selling the shares for cash would require that you pay the capital gains tax, but you could avoid those taxes by donating the appreciated stock to a charity. If you donated the appreciated stocks to Habitat, the entire gift of $1,000 goes to support our work.  Your "cost" of the donation could be looked at as the $600 you spent on the initial purchase of the stock, but the $1,000 gift becomes your tax deduction, and you get to avoid the hefty capital gains taxes on the appreciated stock value.  It's a win-win for everyone.

Of course certain rules apply, such as the need to have had the stock for over a year, so always consult with you financial adviser or tax preparer.

Overall, investing in stocks can be a nice way to increase your wealth, and donating appreciated stocks to charity can be a great way to avoid paying heavy capital gains taxes come year end.

If you are interested in donating stock or making a planned gift, please contact Peter Larson, Director of Development, at 703-521-9890 x103.
Thanks!
