From The Director

Greetings!

Longer days mark the changing of seasons, as does the uptick in our build activity at Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia!  With two major new construction projects breaking ground this season, a complete interior renovation of a townhome, and several other critical home repair projects, our demand for community involvement is growing.  To build we need construction volunteers, donations, and ReStore volunteers.  Simply put, we can't do what we do without your support.

Construction Volunteers
Community build dates will be announced soon for construction volunteers, to be added to to our announcement list, learn more and join our list for construction opportunities.  If you are not sure if construction is your thing, check out this month's FAQ

ReStore Volunteers

Our ReStores depend on our wonderful volunteers, who help organize donations, assist customers, and keep our stores selling!  ReStore volunteering is great for individuals and groups.  Read more about volunteering at our ReStores.

Donations

It is always a good time to donate to Habitat NOVA!  Your donations of cash, an unwanted vehicle (even that boat that has been hogging your garage for the past many years!), as well as household items for our ReStores are critical to our efforts.

I appreciate the ongoing enthusiasm and support that we receive from so many volunteers and donors!  Please join them, and together we will build strong communities through affordable home ownership!

Best,

Rev. Jon Smoot

Executive Director

P.S. If your business or employer is looking for a great team-building opportunity that also supports our mission, talk to us about group build days and ReStore volunteer days.  Contact Peter Larson, Director of Development for more information.

CFC Rule Change Proposed, Action Needed

Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia receives significant financial support through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), a workplace giving program for Federal and Military employees.

The Office of Personnel Management has proposed changes to the CFC program for the thousands of local, regional, and national nonprofits that heavily rely on the generosity of federal and federal contract employees.  Although some changes are positive, there are some that would dramatically reduce giving and participation.

Among our chief concerns are:
  • Charities will have to pay an annual, non-refundable, upfront entry fee of unknown amount that will change annually.
  • Many current giving options will be eliminated which will result in a dramatic drop in giving. OPM has proposed eliminating paper pledges in favor of online and electronic giving. OPM has also proposed eliminating cash and check gifts.
  •  The elimination of local campaign structure, in favor of centralized bureaucracies at a regional level, which would remove much of the local engagement and ownership vital to successful campaigns.

Here are steps you can take to save the CFC:

  • Review the proposed changes and inform your friends and family and spread the message that these key proposed changes pose an imminent threat to the CFC.
  • Reach out to your Congressional representative and tell him why the CFC is important to you.
  • Submit your comments to the Federal Register by the June 7th deadline

  • Also submit your comments directly to the Office of Personnel Management at:

Keith Willingham, Director,

Combined Federal Campaign,

U.S. Office of Personnel Management,

Room 6484A,

1900 E Street NW.

Washington, DC 20415

  • Reach out to Congress (find your representative here,) including the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, who oversees OPM, expressing your concern to the proposed changes. Representative Gerry Connolly, the co-chair of the committee, represents the 11th District of Virginia. His address is:

The Honorable Gerry Connolly

We Answer Your Frequently Asked QuestionsSpringBuild

constructionDear Habitat Herald,
I am excited to hear about the Douglass Avenue project! It's near my office, and I'd like to get my colleagues together to help build the home. How do we sign up? What if we have never built anything before?
-DIY in Falls Church

Dear DIY,
Thank you for wanting to support our Douglass Avenue build! There are many different jobs on a construction site and no experience is required! We welcome all levels of ability and experience. There's more to building a house than hauling two-by-fours; sanding, painting, installing light switches, sawing, nailing, and much more! And unlike a DIY project at your house, we'll have professionals on-hand to supervise and answer questions.

Don't Demolish -- Deconstruct & Donate to ReStore!

With space at a premium in Northern Virginia, sometimes a buyer will purchase a home that is no longer habitable, planning to build a new home on the property.

The easy solution is to just pay the flat fee to demolish the structure. But by taking just a few extra steps, you can get a sizable tax deduction and help the environment. For more details, read this article from WTAS.  Ready to donate? Call our ReStore donation line at 703-360-6700 to arrange for pick up of your usable cabinets, appliances and fixtures.
