Greetings!
April showers, bring May ... builds! Well, even though we haven't had many showers, we are definitely busy planning our May builds. We completed a couple home repair projects in April, including one in Herndon where a longtime supporter and benefactor, Richard Semmler, presented me with a check for more than $20,000! Read more about Richard and his work, we are so inspired by him.
We are so pleased to partner with the City of Falls Church and Falls Church Presbyterian Church to provide critical repairs on the historic 1850s Ives House, through a Community Development Block Grant. Repairs are scheduled to being soon.
I'm excited to announce that we have officially closed on the purchase of a property at Saguaro Place in Centreville. Habitat NOVA will undertake a major property renovation at that location later on this year.
And looking ahead to June, please save the date for June 25. That's when we will have our ceremonial ground breaking at the Douglass Avenue home site. I hope you'll join us for some fellowship as we celebrate this major project. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to kwalsh@habitatnova.org and she will provide you with more details.
Best,
Rev. Jon Smoot

| IRA Charitable Rollover Is Back for 2013! |
If you have savings in an individual retirement account (IRA) , you can use it to support Habitat NoVa while reducing your tax liability. The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, passed by Congress on January 1, 2013, allows you to make a tax-free charitable distribution to a charity of up to $100,000 from traditional IRAs and ROTH IRAs.
To take advantage of this opportunity you must:
- Be at least 70 ½ years old
- Make the gift before December 31, 2013, when the provision is scheduled to expire again
As you know, retirement plan assets are typically subject to a heavy tax burden. If you have saved tax-deferred income in an IRA and are currently required to take distributions, any amount you donate directly to Habitat NoVa will count toward your minimum required distribution. It is an easy, tax-free way to help advance our mission of affordable home ownership. Everyone's financial situation is unique, so please contact your tax advisor with questions about how this affects you. To make a donation, contact Peter Larson at (703) 521-9890 ex 103.

| Committed Donor & Volunteer: Richard Semmler |
College Professor Gives Time, Talent, Treasure
Dr. Richard Semmler, a long time Habitat NOVA volunteer and benefactor, recently presented $20,750 to Executive Director, Rev. Jon Smoot. $750 of this donation goes toward building homes in Tanzania, and $20,000 supports our local home repair program, A Brush With Kindness. Over the last 18 years, Dr. Semmler has given $323,361, supporting many of our home builds. Dr. Semmler presented his most recent contribution while volunteering with fellow alumni from SUNY Plattsburgh.
Dr. Semmler, a mathematics professor at Northern Virginia Community College's Annandale campus was recognized for his philanthropic spirit with the "Humanitarian of the Year" award, given by the students involved in the "Pathway to Baccalaureate" program. He has also provided 94 scholarships to Pathway students and led them on volunteer outings helping to build Habitat for Humanity homes and helping to feed the hungry at the D.C. Central Union Mission.
Congratulations, Richard for your award, and thank you for your steadfast commitment to Habitat for Humanity!

We Answer Your Frequently Asked Questions
Dear Habitat Herald,
I just opened my mail and saw a letter from Habitat for Humanity International. If I send them a check, will the money go towards your Douglass Avenue home?
-Feeling Generous in Vienna
Dear Generous,
Thank you for wanting to support our Douglass Avenue build! Habitat for Humanity International does a lot of great work, but they do not financially support local projects. In fact, Habitat NOVA "tithes" 10% of all the donations we receive to Habitat International to support the great work that they do internationally.
You see, Habitat functions much like your favorite restaurant franchise -- although we receive no monies or financial support from International, as a franchise/affiliate we do receive programmatic guidance and support with advocacy efforts for affordable housing on a national and international level. If you want your gift to Habitat International to include a donation to Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia, you may designate the percentage of your gift to both organizations. -Habitat Herald
