Illinois kids only get one chance at an education and we must do everything we can to ensure that they get access to the quality schools they need and deserve.  Schools have been forced to cut funding to classroom supplies and extracurricular activities.  The Invest in Kids Act is a historic step toward providing all children with the best education possible by providing funds to the following four programs:

1. The Invest in Kids Act will provide a $250 tax credit to reimburse teachers for their out-of-pocket classroom expenses
2. In tough budgetary times, music, arts, and sports programs are first to be cut.  The Act will provide funding to ensure these critical programs continue.
3. Increase donations across the state to nonprofit scholarship organizations to provide scholarships to students to attend K through 12th grade, public and private schools.
4. Funding will be made available to help schools ensure that students are safe and can learn in well-maintained building.

Funding The Invest In Kids Act
The Act is a simple and proven bipartisan plan to increase investment in Illinois education without raising taxes. The legislation provides a dollar-for-dollar state tax credit for any person or business that makes a donation to public schools, education related non-profits or scholarship organizations.

Preschool & Kindergarten Night - Success!  Thank You Families

Thank you Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. Dalton, Mrs. Mihalka, and Mrs. Knudson for hosting our year-end Preschool and Kindergarten Night.  Re-enrolled, new and prospective families listened to our faculty talk about our programs, child readiness, and early childhood development.

Does my student coming into kindergarten need to know how to read? Will my student coming into kindergarten be bored if they know how to read already?

No to both! It is normal that all students come in at different skill levels. Our reading and writing program, Superkids, targets all skill levels. The program allocates time on each letter but it is extremely interactive and engaging for all skill levels. The students who already know letters and letter sounds are engaged during whole group lessons and are challenged during small group activities. The Superkids program has multiple resources for challenging the higher skill level students and the same amount of resources to build the skills of the lower level students. On a daily basis, we break up into small groups where students are completing and engaging in activities at their skill level. This enables the students to complete activities without being frustrated or without being "bored."

My preschool child has no interest in coloring, but I hear that it is a great way to build their fine motor skills. What else can my child do? I hear listening to music can help my child with reading skills. Is this true? My child's handwriting grip is not correct. Are there any tips to help improve their grip?

Every child develops at their own pace. Try not to compare your child. Handwriting takes time to develop.  If handwriting is forced too early it may cause problems later. Before your child writes their name, they need to develop their fine motor muscles   Strong  gross motor skills lead to strong fine motor skills.  It is important to develop both.  One of the best ways to develop fine motor skills is "play with purpose" for example: play dough, involving tweezers or clothes pins to move objects, finger puppets, coloring, playing with magnets on the refrigerator, putting paper on the wall and coloring standing up, using broken crayons and golf pencils to encourage correct grip - these activities use the same muscles that are used during handwriting.  Don't forget to play music this summer. A great summer activity is blowing bubbles while listening to music. It uses almost all of your child's senses!  Each component of music affects a different part of the brain. It is a great way to help a child learn and their brain grow.

Financial Assistance - Caritas Scholars

Funding for Caritas Scholars is provided and administered by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Eligibility for Caritas Scholars is restricted to new students entering Consortium schools in K-8th grade.  Qualifying students are eligible for these scholarships for three consecutive years as long as they are enrolled in Catholic schools within the Archdiocese, their families continue to apply and demonstrate financial need and remain in good standing academically and financially as designated by the guidelines of the program.

Caritas scholarships are for new students in K-8, students entering Kindergarten if they are currently in our preschool, and students entering 6th grade at Frassati if they are currently in our elementary schools. For this scholarship, a FACTS financial aid application must be completed, and the Caritas form must be submitted to the Office of Catholic Schools. If you are receiving a Caritas Scholarship this year, you must complete the FACTS financial aid application and Caritas application to be considered for the 2015-2016 school year.

O Lord, You taught your disciples to welcome the children in their midst and to imitate their childlike innocence and love. Bless our efforts to form our children in the spirit of the Gospel and to educate them for their life and work in the world. Through the Catholic Consortium of Lake County, may we achieve our highest aspirations for Catholic Education and raise up a new generation of well-educated disciples who are dedicated to you and to your kingdom. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
