Hope you all can make it to the next Westside neighborhood meeting on community control of the police, organizing communities for an all elected Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC). At this Saturdays' meeting we will be strategizing how to pressure our aldermen to endorse and work for the enactment of the CPAC ordinance.
The incriminating video of the murder of Laquan McDonald by Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke has without a doubt given rise to a persistent crisis in political leadership and governance in Chicago.
Two of the main pillars of the criminal justice system, the States Attorney (Prosecutor) and the Chicago Police Department have been exposed as perpetrators of injustice in the case of Laquan McDonald, Cedric Chatman, Bettie Jones, Quintonio LeGrier and numerous other cases. And the Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, who suppressed incriminating evidence in a murder case for 400 days, has been exposed as the Mayor who covers up police crimes as opposed to holding the police accountable. The Mayor and the City Council have allowed the Superintendent of Police, the Independent Police Review Authority, the Police Board and the Internal Affairs Department to cover up, excuse and justify police crimes. These are facts, not mere allegations, that presently the City of Chicago and the Nation are aware of. The question is what are we going to do about it?
There is a mass outcry demanding that Rahm Emanuel, Prosecuting Attorney Anita Alvarez resign and that the DOJ also hold City Council accountable for the cover-up of the murder of Laquan McDonald. These are undoubtedly just demands but they don't reach the heart of the problem. We need to change the system, no more IPRA, no more Police Board, no more Internal Affairs, no more review boards or overseers, only community control. We, the People have an inalienable democratic right to control who police our communities and how they police our communities.
Right now the challenge of the moment is that we summon all our forces to pressure each of our alderman to call an emergency session to pass our proposed ordinance.
Come and join other community members as we review which aldermen are supposed to serving us all and plan what & how we can all work together to demand that they do!

Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!
