 MEDIA ADVISORY

Chicago labor and community leaders urge an elected Civilian Police  Accountability Council (CPAC) in the wake of unmitigated police crimes

 What: Press Conference
 When: 11.00am Thursday, May 7, 2015
Where: 5th Floor, Mayors Office, Chicago City Hall, 21 N. LaSalle St

On Thursday, May 7, 2015 a press conference will be held in front of Mayor Rahm  Emmanuel's 5th Floor office at City Hall in response to continued police killings of  Black people. The Chicago Alliance Against Racist & Political Repression

(CAARPR) and representatives from social activist groups and labor unions will  demand that the Mayor support the call for the establishment of an elected Civilian  Police Accountability Council (CPAC) to end the deadly cycle of police violence  that's being disproportionately perpetrated against Black and Latino people in  Chicago.  CPAC will abolish and replace the highly biased and ineffective Police  Board and the handpicked Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA).

The recent astonishingly unjust acquittal of Chicago Police detective, Dante Servin,  for the cold blooded killing of 22 year old Rekia Boyd and protests in Baltimore that  were sparked by the police killing of Freddie Gray, a 25 year old Black man who  died in police custody after being brutally beaten, have intensified a burgeoning  national call for police accountability. Holding police accountable for their violent  behavior and misconduct, particularly in the Black community, has become a  national rallying cry for real systemic change. Attending families of Chicago police  crime victims, community groups, labor unions, lawyers, LGBTQ community  members, educators, youth organizations, labor support groups and the CAARPR  demand CPAC-a concrete solution for police accountability and civilian  empowerment in Chicago.
