Rekia Boyd
RekiaNo Justice for Rekia
"We, Advocates from the city of Chicago, have been  observing the trial in the courtroom, and we believe the  State's prosecutors are deliberately trying to engineer a  verdict of "not guilty."

A letter was hand delivered on April 16 to the Assistant  State's Attorneys, on the case of Dante  Servin, the CPD  officer charged with manslaughter in the murder of Rekia Boyd. Servin was  acquitted of all  charges on Monday (April 20) by Judge Dennis Porter in a summary judgment  dismissing the  State's charges.

Once again this criminal justice system, with its rotten racist core, has refused to punish a  police officer who wantonly and recklessly murdered Rekia Boyd.

In Chicago and in the Nation we are going to have to heighten the struggle to create laws that  will empower the people to hold the police accountable. We need an all elected, all Civilian  Police Accountability Council. We need more than a few dozen people in the streets.

ColorblindnessColor Blindness in the Age of Escalating Racism

The three analyses of the Chicago Mayoral election by Amisha Patel, John Nichols and Thomas A. Corfman (Portside April 9, 2015) are remarkable mainly for what they don't say. They accurately describe the coalition around the progressive candidate, Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, as grassroots, including very important large industrial unions such as the Teachers, Transit Workers, and Service Employees. They note the historic quality of this coalition. But by their omissions they endanger the very coalition they are proclaiming.

Throughout the election campaign, and in these analyses, you would never know that Chicago is a city in which over half the population suffers under virtual military occupation...

STOP & SHOOT

Steve Craig, Stop Police Crimes Organizing Committee
, CAARPR

The unchecked power of the police has been further exposed in recent weeks, its raw racism revealed.  It begins with the 'stop'. The cop decides who to stop with his or her observations, weighted with the targeting tool of racial profiling-cop as judge.  The stop proceeds and suspicions or infractions confirmed, a broken tail-light, a loose cigarette, a half-smoked blunt-cop as jury.  Reach for a wallet, a cell phone, raise your hands, resist or run.  Cop fears are 'justified', and the shooting starts-cop as executioner.  Another black or brown body lies still, dehumanized and defiled...
