Shul School

First day of Shul School will be September 24 at the TES Shabbat Retreat.

Adult Education

Shabbat Observance - Led by Rabbi Vanessa Grajwer Boettiger.
Are you someone who has wanted to have a consistent Shabbat practice, but just didn't know how to go about it? Or do you have a practice, but want to deepen it, or make it more meaningful? Are you in an interfaith relationship and wanting to explore Shabbat practices that make sense for both of you? Or are you simply curious about what it would be like to have full permission to simply rest for one entire day each week?
In this class, we will look at the origin of Shabbat in Jewish text and tradition and how that can impact and inform (or not) our lives today. We will explore the meaning of work, rest, and play and the idea of a rhythm in each week. Please bring your thoughts, questions, and ideas--there will be plenty of time for discussion.
Sundays, September 11 and 18 at 4:00 PM

Hebrew Classes to Resume, taught by Sasha Borenstein
Hebrew classes will resume on Monday, Nov. 7, 2016 and will go for 10
weeks. The exact dates will have to be determined by the participants because of Thanksgiving, New Year's breaks.

Sasha will be offering another beginning Hebrew, for people who need to learn the consonants and vowels and gain some fluency in reading individual words and learning some vocabulary.  We will be using the Yoffee Toffee book again.

The second class will be a combined intermediate/
advanced for anyone who has previously taken some Hebrew classes. It will involve a lot more grammar and reading, vocabulary learning and some writing. The book will be The First Hebrew Primer, Third Edition, Revised with new explanatory notes, by Simon, Resnikoff and Motzkin.  It is available on Amazon.com and the participants should order it themselves.  It costs $34.00

Beginning class will meet from 6:00 - 7:00PM.  The second class from 7:10-8:10PM. Class fees will be announced soon.

Lighting Prayer

For the love that death cannot sever, for the time we shared along life's path, for the gifts of heart and mind, we are grateful. Divine one, help us to understand that grief and love go hand in hand.

As we are made more aware of light by kindling this Yahrzeit candle, may we remember the light which (say the name) brought in the world.

Zich-ro-no(m) Zich-ro-nah(f) liv'ra-cha.
May his/her memory be for a blessing.

Message from Rabbi Boettiger
Hodesh Tov - Happy New Month of Elul

I want to start this month's reflection by saying that I hope everyone who is reading this can join us at Temple Emek Shalom for this High Holy Day season. Please be welcome! Rosh Hashanah begins on Sunday evening, October 2nd - and the Days of Awe continue from there.

This new month gives us a portal by which we might enter these awe-filled days. There is much happening in the month of Elul here at TES - including our new Adult Education offering of "Exploring Judaism" - a deep-dive introduction to Judaism class stretching from September through December, and co-taught by five different rabbis and teachers in our community. Meditation and Hebrew classes resume. Torah Study continues. Rabbi Vanessa Boettiger is teaching a two-part class on Shabbat observance and practice. Our fourth Mussar cohort begins. We have Saturday morning services each week, as well as lay-led Kabbalat Shabbat services on most Fridays. Our special musical service, Shabbat Shirah, takes place this month on Friday evening, September 16th.

I want to offer a special invitation for community members to RSVP and join us for our daylong Shabbat gathering at Buckhorn Springs on Saturday, September 24th (see below for more information), which will culminate in the actual ritual that brings us right up to the gateway of the New Year - Selichot.

In the month of Elul, we begin again. Jewish tradition gives us the language of teshuvah (repentance/return) to help navigate this time. Rabbi Zalman Shachter-Shalomi (z"l) taught that there are many dimensions of teshuvah- each comes with some guiding questions by which we might approach it.

We do teshuvat ha'guf, teshuvah of the body. What does the body need? How are we neglecting it, how are we not nourishing it?

We do teshuvat ha'chevrah, teshuvah in our immediate, human community. What do we bring into a room when we walk into it angry, for instance? What impact does it have on those close to me, if I come home from work worn down? How can I be more aware about how my behavior and presence is affecting others in subtle ways?

We do teshuvat ha'saviva, teshuvah in our broader surroundings. Can I take responsibility for whether or not I look at strangers and say hello? And savivah extends to the larger non-human environment, too. Can I take responsibility for the choices I've made about how much energy I spend, or how much water I'm using? Can I begin to notice those things without blame in a way that helps me make more skillful choices?

We do teshuvat machshavah, diboor, ma'aseh - teshuvah of thought, speech, and action. "How do I change the mantras that run through my mind and tell me who I am?" Or that tell me who others are? "How do I bring my thought and speech into alignment with my actions?"

We don't do this work in isolation. The entire world practices this ancient motion of leaving and returning: the trees, the tides, the sun and moon, squirrels, raccoons, birds, whales, people of every conceivable background and orientation. We all are turning and returning, as Fall begins to roll around. Welcome back.

With blessing to each of you,

Rabbi Joshua Boettiger
Message from Adie Goldberg, President

September 1. The end of summer. Return... to school, to schedules, to shorter days, and back to Temple. With this return, the Hebrew month of Elul begins and beckons. This is a month of self reflection... a period of seeing where we miss the mark and what goals we can set for ourselves to move closer to that mark.

Join us this month in an Elul return to Shul...perhaps a class (Hebrew, studying Shabbat Observance with Rabbi Vanessa), attending a Shabbat service, or joining the community on the 24th at Buckhorn Springs for a community Shabbat marking Selichot and the beginning of Shul School.

The perfectionist in me wants to accomplish everything at once. The clinical social worker in me knows this is a prescription for disappointment and failure. We're taught that goals need to be realistic, specific, relevant and time-limited. As much as I want to respond to all your requests, suggestions and concerns at once, the Board is trying to find the balance between tending to the business at hand  (planning for our annual Break Fast, closing out last year's budget) while looking at the bigger picture - being present to the possibility of new ways of problem solving; creating in the moment the welcoming environment we aspire to be; and accepting the fact that we as a Board will let you down.

In my personal Elul accounting, I am committing to a daily repetition of  Reb Nachman of Breslov's advice:

Teach me, ....
To make a fresh start;
To break yesterday's patterns;
To stop telling myself I can't -
When I can,
I am not -
When I am,
I am stuck -
When I am eminently free.

Stay in touch. Let me know how we can support each other in getting closer to the mark.

B'shalom,
Adie

High Holy Days Yizkor 2016
Dear TES Congregation and Friends,
The heat of summer is almost passed and your Board of Directors, Religious Practices Committee, clergy and staff are busy planning for the upcoming High Holy Days. Preparation of the special Yizkor prayer list, to be read aloud on Yom Kippur, October 12, is one of the items on our to-do list.  Including the names of your departed loved ones on the Yizkor list is a traditional memorial tribute. To submit those names to us, you may pick up a form to fill out at the TES office, or click here for a printable form. Please return your completed form to TES by September 15 (but earlier is always better!). Thank you.

Catherine Coulson Memorial Tree
If you haven't seen your name among those who have donated to Catherine's memorial, now is a great time to do so. We are eager to have sufficient funds raised in time for Catherine's yahrzeit on September 28 and also to have the memorial in place in time for Rosh Hashanah, October 2. Thank you for helping to honor Catherine and her devotion to Emek Shalom and its congregants.

Mitzvah Kitchen, September 29
The Mitzvah Kitchen continues and member Jerrine Rowley and her husband David are scheduled to.bake loaves of challah again on Thursday, September 29, in the Temple kitchen.  We ask you, our congregants, to contact the Rabbi or Kathy at 541-488-2909, so a challah can be delivered to you or a fellow congregant who is experiencing a special event or an illness in the family.  If you are to receive a challah and are not at home, the challah will be left in a sealed bag by your front door.  We hope that the challah that we provide will add to your Shabbat celebration or give you some comfort during a difficult time.
